Survey: Do You Watch Your Water?
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto

We are not running around in stillsuits like the Fremen of Arrakis yet, but water is getting to be a problem on this planet. From Atlanta to Arizona, the pipes are running dry. There are lots of things we can do to cut back on water use, yet some in Atlanta are sneaking out at night to water their lawns. In the Southwest, The Colorado is a shadow of its former self and Lake Mead will soon be Pond Mead, yet there are still lots of green lawns in Las Vegas. In our guide for How to Go Green: Water, we have all kinds of suggestions for cutting your water use;

i would lik to know how its controlled? any tips thats easy to do?
Good survey, but it doesn't take into account those of us who live in high-rises and have no lawn to care for and no driveway in which to wash their car. So in that respect, I feel that I'm doing more good than the survey implies.
As usual I fall in between. Mellow yellow, sometimes. Rain barrel, yes. The yard never gets irrigated, but the small vegetable garden does if the rain barrel runs dry. Almost never wash vehicles. Short shower, yes, low flow, no. Fix leaks, yes. Some of the people in Atlanta could flush their toilet with swimming pool water, but that requires both effort and concern, so it absolutely won't happen. There is never any concern until it is too late to do anything about it. Typical.
There's a minimum bill here that I never go over even on my worst months. If they want to encourage people to save some water maybe they need to eliminate that.
With a lot of eyes on Lake Meade, I wonder what the water guzzling casinos are doing to reduce their consumption?
I would assume the topic image is from the DUNE series.
but which?
and does anyone got a link to the larger or un-cropped image?
LA: there is a photo credit under the poll with a link to the artist .

Like any good fremen I do my best to save as much water as possible, because I live in a rented Sietch i can't control the type of tub/toilet I have but I do let it mellow, and take very short showers (I have very short hair so I am in and out). Turn off the tap while brushing the teeth, don't have a lawn, drive a bike (wash with damp cloth) and like to play in the rain (free shower). If I had my druthers I would probly have some rain barrels, and a solar thermal panel for free hot showers year round.
My tips for greening your water:
*Shorter shower
*colder shower
*turn water off while applying soap
*shorter hand-washing
*colder hand-washing
*you only need the water on three times when brushing your teeth, and turn it off immediately: wet the brush, rinse the brush, rinse your mouth
*Scrub dishes instead of letting water flow over them
*Recycle!
*Don't water your garden, unless a plant specifically needs it. They usually get enough water from the rain.
*"If it's yellow..."
*Skip a day of showering, especially on a day you know no one's going to see you (ie, a lazy Sunday)
*If people are going to see you, skip a shower anyway, and just wash your face and hair in the sink. And cologne goes a surprisingly long way...
So here is a question for many. What are your cities doing to help with residents reduce the water they use?
Here in Toronto, the city has given each homeowner (and renter!) a energy saving kit. It contains low flow heads for showers (pretty nice ones too) and regular faucets, insulation for pipes, compact fluorescent bulbs and coupons.
Conservation is the first step. I hope they are taking it down there.
