The geniuses at Google have upgraded their handy Google Transit bus, train and other public transportation mapping feature -- mentioned here and here on TreeHugger -- and integrated it into its more popular Google Maps. When searching for directions, just click "Take Public Transit" and your route, directions and even cost (with a comparison versus driving) will pop right up. Slick.

Hit the jump to see all the places included in Google Transit's new mashup with Google Maps, including all the way over to Japan. ::Google Transit via ::AutoblogGreen

Im glad Google is working on a non-car alternative to travel. I live in Chicago and i currently use hopstop.com (which works great by the way)

nice. this will actually be useful!

I wish this would come to Sao Paulo. The one we have here just doesn't work properly.

Winnipeg Transit (Manitoba, Canada)
has been using google maps for awhile - ever since their Navigo (online trip planner) came into existence.

Check out this approach to a graphic version of a bus schedule. Still in planning but think of a GPS system (tomtom) only it would show the buss and where it is scheduled to be on the route.

Could be pushed to cell phones and blackberries.
