FreeRice: Play a Game and Feed the Hungry
by Bonnie Alter, London on 10.24.07
It's not exactly on-message but it's addictive and it's for a good cause. FreeRice is a computer "game" that tests your vocabulary and for every word that you get right, 10 grains of rice are donated through the United Nations to end world hunger.
Curious? It's simple: a word pops up with multiple choice answers. If you click the right one then a harder word comes up and the level of difficulty keeps increasing. For every click 10 grains of rice are donated to the United Nations World Food Programme. Since October 7, 2007 when it began, 164,650,960 grains of rice have been donated.
The site is funded by the advertisers: Macy's, Fujitsu, Timelife, Apple, Office Depot, Reader's Digest and many more whose names pop up as you play the game. The World Food Programme is the world’s largest food aid agency, working with over 1,000 other organizations in over 75 countries. Sounds good, so if you are bored, start playing and help the hungry while you're at it. :: FreeRice Via :: Hippyshopper

sweet - thats a really cool game idea! abd i hope its being played.
this game is fun. annoying, though, too because not all the definitions are completely accurate, but close enough that you can get the right one anyway.
Keep in mind- most rice farms generate as much methane as most ranches.
This is fun. Not sure about the practicality, but together, there seems to be a massive donation. I've done 1000 grains so far :-)

This a great game...It's addicing and it's for a good cause...what game could be smarter?
Great game. great idea!
Neither FreeRice.com nor Poverty.org are registered charities. This is a good idea but I always appreciate a little due diligence before investing my time (time is money after all). Does anyone know of a third party that has verified the claims of this site?
Mahalie (and others with reasonable doubts about its practicality and legitimacy), back on the 10th of Nov they donated enough rice to the UN to feed 50000 ppl for one day http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7088447.stm
Look at their totals page and it appears they have since earned at least 3 times that much.
Sounds good to me.
Check this one out: www.freeflour.com
The originator was interviewed by 60 Minutes. That's enough due diligence for me!
cool yeah dude ride on!!!
Cool Dude Ride on!!!!!
I've been clicking for free rice for a couple of weeks now daily. It's addictive and a great idea. Unfortunately I have a hard time getting to the game part. I usually do a google search for feed rice game and it usually brings me to it. Not today though that won't even work. I'm just about ready to give up on it, can't access it!
This is a very interesting game, we just saw it on CNN STUDENT NEWS, im now doing an article on it. Im suprised that you can, or are able to feed people over the internet. One thing i dont get is
where does the money come from to buy the rice?
It cant just pop up.
thank you for being so generous to the WORLD :].
