Bookcase Into a Bed: A New Take on the Murphy Bed

Here's an interesting take on the folding Murphy bed idea: instead of folding into the wall, this concept jigsaw-puzzles together to become part of the wall. The bookcase/bed combination works together to help maximize space and give your walls a little extra pop of color; when it's bedtime, just take down your bookcase and you've got a bed.

We like that the bookcases remain on the wall, so you don't have to take stuff off the shelves when it's time to go to bed, but we see a few tricky spots in the day to day operation as well; you'd have to make the bed every night (unless it came with a puzzle-shaped fitted sheet) and it might be a little weird sleeping with a puzzle-shaped crease in the middle. Still, it's a great idea (if the implementation leaves a little to be desired) so we'll hope that some of the kinks will get worked out for Puzzle-Bed 2.0. via ::Yanko Design

Too bad the matress on the floor is twice as wide as the one in the wall... a little misleading.

Great idea though.

Looks horribly uncomfortible too.... nobody is in this much of a bind for space.

the mattress is in two pieces - so it's the right size. look carefully.
Also, i really don't think this would be a good choice for someone's every-night bed, but would be great as a guest bed. if you were in a very small space and didn't have a place for guests, this would make any room a guest room in a couple of minutes.

I have a Murphy Bed that is a bookcase. The whole thing rolls out of a frame (perpendicular to the wall), spins around, then rolls back in. The bookcase stays vertical when the bed comes down. I've had little luck researching who made it (we bought it second hand) but I was told by a Murphy Bed distributer that he thinks it was an Italian design from the 60's. It even has little side tables that slide out when the bed is down.
