Blog Action Day Takes the Blogosphere by Storm

Today is Blog Action Day, and TreeHugger is on board to help bloggers around the web unite to put a single important issue on everyone's mind: the environment. Sure, TreeHugger works on that every day, but we're excited to participate in this "blogger's Earth Day," to help get other blogs, like our pals at Lifehacker, and forward-looking companies, like Reddit and Google, on board for the green.

Here's how it works: blogs from all over the world sign up to publish green posts to their sites, raising awareness about the environment, but that's where the "rules" end; the organizers have been working hard not to push any particular agenda. Participating blogs are encouraged to cover the green world from their own perspective, putting some unique spin on a subject getting more pervasive every day; they can also donate the day's revenue to an environmental charity of their choice. The end result, hopefully, is that more blogs and readers pay more regular attention to green topics; we're all playing for the same team here, and the more, the merrier.

Over 15,000 blogs have signed up, and they'll reach over 12.5 million readers today via RSS alone, so early signs point to a success here in the inaugural year. Check out who is participating and surf on out into the extended green blogosphere to see what people have to say about the planet. With any luck, this'll be the first day of many that green topics get their due in blogs around the world. ::Blog Action Day

GREENville, Pennsylvania, USA has made a good
start on greening up by putting large in-the-
ground planters downtown with trees and
flowers planted undernearth. All four industries
have gone south, which leaves the small town
with clean air and lots of inexpensive good
housing. Close to the eagle sanctuary at
Pymatuning Dam and the Amish community at
Atlantic, with 4 lakes, good symphony and exc. small college (Thiel), we would like to hear from other small towns working with modest budgets.
By staying "tough on crime", with no beggars
or street people, we're hoping the grow greener
by the day. Sound, helpful suggestions would
be appreciated.

You know, Google isn't the only web company doing it's fair pace in being green.

Y! has been promoting green for a long time. Y! has a wonderful green site, and I remember them sending me a fluorescent light bulb in the mail. Plus a canvas bag instead of taking groceries at the store.

MSN/Windows Live is green as well. Take for instance the Live Earth concerts. They managed to promote being green in a music sense. Plus, if you use Windows Live Messenger, the I'm initiative promises to send a bit of Microsoft's ad revenue to an organization of your choice, every time you send an IM message.

Such notable organizations you can help are stopglobalwarming.org and the Sierra Club site.

So Google isn't the only one.

One of the most helpful and informative things that you can do for Blog Action Day is to calculate your or your family's impact on our climate by using The Nature Conservancy's online carbon footprint calculator at http://www.nature.org/initiatives/climatechange/calculator/ -- this carbon calculator helps you discover how your daily behaviors and lifestyle add up to help or harm our planet.

Happy Blog Action Day! In honor of Blog Action Day, I just started this new section in my blog, called Blogacts, for blogging + activism. I would like to invite you to be a guest blogger on my blog, and write about one of your blog acts, something you did or are planning to do, involving both writing in your blog, and following up with some kind of activist gesture in your community. Of course, I would link the post back to your site!

let me know if that is something you would like to do, I would certainly feel honored if you did.

It's been about 3 1/2 months since Blog Action Day. It's hard to measure the impact, but I am seeing some of my friends in my industry blog more about "green" building materials.

I might be an odd bird, but I am a Minneapolis real estate agent who thinks that people should consider building their homes out of dirt.

Here's a post I wrote about the wonders of building with "cob." Please share it with your readers any way you wish. I would like to provoke some thinking about this idea.
