Are You Kidding Us, Safeway?

safeway organic water

Organic. Bottled. Water. Because nothing says regular tap water like "antibiotics, growth hormones, synthetic pesticides and genetic modification." Right?

The price sticker says: "water lemon lime". So the bottle probably contains some kind of lemonade, rather than just water.

If you look at it, its flavored, not pure water. The flavoring that most companies use is pure chemical, so an organic flavored water is a viable product.

jump to top Daniel says:

Uh...gee, I don't know - perhaps the Organic refers to the lemons and other fruit that go into the flavorings of those FLAVORED waters. There are plenty of reasons to beat up on Safeway - this isn't one of them.

OK organic water?? Come on this is pathetic.

This is for morons to part with their money, organic water..I cant believe I'm seeing this....

PATHETIC!!

As far as flavoring, usually GMO corn syrup is the first ingredient after water, so an organic flavored water makes sense. But the "No growth hormones" et al sounds like the Safeway marketing team needs a lesson on organics.

This is one of those products that usually has the ingredient "flavor" or "natural flavor" which always leaves one wondering. If it is packaged overseas, it may read "editable flavor" which is even creepier.

I'm elated that a major grocery chain is emphasizing organics, though I lost a little bit of faith after reading this http://www.treehugger.com/files/2007/09/cornucopia_usda.php

LOL.
that just made my day. hehe!

jump to top anonymouse says:

Actually, since I'm sure less than 5% of the volume is the flavor, it can be whatever they want to put in it. As long as 95% of a product is organic, it gets the label. Who knows what the flavor is made of? It's probably not organic though.

Of course, maybe I misunderstand how much flavor is in there. But I think in that case, it might more appropriately be called a fruit drink, not water.

It could be worse, and SW certainly does more stupid things than this. But still. I wouldn't be able to ignore it myself, and I don't blame TH for calling attention to it.

Ignoring the fancy waters, as if they are really anything more than bottled water, is dangerous. That's why they are hawking us this crap. Those of us who won't buy bottled water might buy this stuff if we forget what it really is, with the USDA sticker on it.

I've been drinking tap water for 29 years.

Here's to another 29!

Is the plastic bottle organic too?

If you're concerned about the environment at all, this is one step forward, six steps back.

I call B.S. As I mentioned over at Corpus Callosum, O Water is an entirely different brand from the Safeway line of Organics generics. Someone's just being a cheeky monkey...

I try to introduce diet water, do you think it will have a big market share?

jump to top Anonymous says:

doesn't organic imply that there is carbon in the product...h2o lacks carbon...i'm confused...

In the UK, there's an organic spring water that's guaranteed to come from soil certified organic by the Soil Association (usually a reliable certifier). This means that they keep the land around their sources in a pristine state, presumably. That seems pretty good, all things considered.

I would never drink bottled water at home, of course, or at a restaurant. And I'll bring along my Sigg bottle when I'm going out on a hot day, sometimes. But sometimes you find yourself out, thirsty, and with no drinking fountain in sight. In those circumstances, buying organic water is probably the best thing to do.

jump to top Anonymous says:

Ok, only one thing can be said to describe this: LOL!!!

jump to top Cody Sortore says:

Organic water would be 'spring' water that had no added chemicals. It seems far fetched to think that there is any water left on the planet that dosn't have some chemicals in it (ie. MTBE, PCBs etc.) but we can only hope. But, as long as the water s tested 'safe' and has no added chemicals like clorine or flouride it sounds good to me.

jump to top TheJimster says:

People can wear tshirts that say organic on them, but that doesnt mean that we're organicly grown, it means the cotton is...DUH!

I do find organic water to be a little unusual though. The only way it can be organic is if they collect the water straight from fresh water souces, which isn't a good thing. What I think people find odd about this is bottled water isn't very green, packing something natural in plastic is not natural, thus, it is not organic. Sipping water from a stream straight from your lips is natural, thats the only organic water. lol.

I don't think the word organic should be banned just because of it's misuse though, why not just ban the product for misleading the consumer!?! Organic should be used in instances like this [on a shirt label] "Made with organically grown cotton". Not "organically made" Shirts don't occure in nature...lol. They don't grow on trees...Neither do bottles of water. lol.

jump to top Garrett S. says:

ACTUALLY THE ORGANIC WATER DOESNT EXIST,ONLY THE SOURCE WHERE THE WATER COMES OUT CAN BE CERTIFIED ORGANIC

jump to top Anonymous says:

Honestly I would rather drink Aquafina than "organic water" *shivers*

jump to top Anonymous says:

Water itsself isn't even organic, so to put that on a bottle of water in the first place is false.

And now a days even water that comes from the city water has other chemicals in it.

Mine as well stick to well water.
