Yahoo!'s Green Icon Challenge Winners Announced

Last month, Yahoo! went searching for the next great green icon (see our coverage here) to signify green and to help flag greener things you can do all over their network of sites -- "everything from making green purchases to finding the most fuel-efficient cars," they said. Almost 500 entries later, the voting has ended and the new icon is..."Earth Point!" (above left), submitted by Leah Dickey.
For her efforts, Ms. Dickey gets to choose the non-profit where $20,000 in prize money goes; both second place, "Yahoo! Leaf" (above, center) and third place, "green yahoo! tree mod" (above right) get to send $5,000 to a non-profit of their choosing. More on the winners can be found here, along with the rest of the entrants (who, let's face it, all won just by entering); over the next few months, Yahoo! will be finalizing the icon through various usability measures and preparing it to appear across the network in properties such as Yahoo! Autos, Yahoo! Groups and Yahoo! Shopping. Check out more at ::Bix

I thought the tree was a toxic cloud.
As a former Yahoo (employee) I have to say this whole "green" campaign is disgusting, considering the company's doing next to nothing to actually change its impact on the environment. Like almost every other large company, lights and A/C (you can't open a window) stay on 24/7/365 in the New York/Hotjobs office, computers are all left on for nightly backups, as are monitors, generally. There is apparently no way to turn off a light. The cafeteria is disposable cups heaven.
A volunteer-organized mailing list lets Yahoos make suggestions about ways to save energy, with no promise that any of it will be put in place.
So while Y! wastes unknown kilowatts, we're supposed to switch to fluorescent to "make a difference". Give me a break!
