And so two became one. After a protracted and very public struggle with the Federal Trade Commission over its $565 million purchase of Wild Oats Markets, Whole Foods bought 96.8 percent of its former rival's outstanding shares at $18.50 per share. Whole Foods will also be taking on Wild Oats' debts, while adding some debt of its own to help finance the deal.

Whole Foods also announced plans to close two Wild Oats outlets in southwest Portland, displacing about 99 employees who have been offered jobs at other Whole Foods stores.

What a long, strange trip down the shopping aisle it's been. ::Natural Products Insider and ::The Oregonian

Bother. I liked Wild Oats, and I liked having the two to choose from.

Choice is always good, but maybe this will improve the quality and range of products at the 2 Wild Oats near me. They both leave much to be desired...

It is so sad to see, yet again, big ugly corporations monopolizing up every last little good thing. Wild Oats was the last truely organic grocery store in L.A.. Whole foods is a glorified Vons with about as much organics as Vons. I just hope that this gets even more people to shop at farmers markets and at Localharvest.com. Or better yet, grow your own food in your own yard. It is not very hard.

Bye Wild Oats, We will all miss you.

DEAR ECOGIRL-
I COMPLETELY DISAGREE with you. Have you had to suffer through stepping in the doors of a vons lately? Apparently not. The smells are gut wrenching. Chemicals, poor food choices and the people that shop there look very sad. I agree that the more local organic you can do and the closer to your home the better. BUT PLEASE never compare a company that cares very little for its customers and one that does everything it can to make a difference. Would you prefer WF never existed? I think not. I shopped at Wild Oats myself. The one that used to be on Centinela and Bundy. Maybe you should revisit vons via bikle of course.

Although i can appreciate the possibility of the 'marriage' of the two stores, i still feel a little sad - call me naive, but with Whole Foods having outlets in London even, it would be nice to see some smaller organic shops get more popularity.

I agree with Gerard. Though I also hate to see large coroprations sucking up the little ones I also think Whole foods helps bring better eating/lifestyle habits to more people. They may be large(r) but I like there focus much more than anyother large supermarket I've come across.

Which Whole Foods have you been shopping at Ecogirl? The one I shop at has tons of organic food, but the Vons nearby leaves a lot to be desired. How I wish Whole Foods would take over that location. Sunset and PCH is crying out for a Whole Foods!!!

This is a good move for wild oats. This might be a sign to organic food eaters to be open to everyone's opinion. I dont eat all organic food, but I dont really focus too much attention to eating organic. I just TRY to eat healthy. Peace out ! And alway's remember to love yourself, your life, and your entire surroundings.
