Survey: Are Eco-Celebs Hypocrites?
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 09.10.07
Erin asks "What is behind the almost obsessive urge to point out the short-comings of celebrities that advocate living a more eco-friendly lifestyle? After writing about green celebs for a couple of years I know well the difference celebs can make when they put their weight behind a cause, so why the apparent need to disgrace high profile eco-advocates?"

Lloyd,
On some of your surveys, I have found myself wanting to mark two or more options at once. On this survey, I would like to mark all the options but am only allowed to mark one. Maybe you could tweak the program so that people can mark one, several or all options if they so choose. Just a suggestion. (The only thing I disagree with is the 'I am tired of all of them' part.)
Yes, ideally they should ride their bike and recycle their waste, but the more that the importance of being green is imposed on the youngsters who look at the celebs as role models, the better, because they're the future. If its chic to be green, perhaps more people will do it.
I've never seen a poll where "all of the above" would better fit my feelings on this subject...
It's an ad hominem attack to say that just because they don't follow exactly what is preached that the message is wrong.
Gotta agree, these are not mutually exclusive survey answers. Especially the first two. Bwah?
There is a lot to be said about walking your talk. Many of their points are valid on a global scale, but every drop in the bucket counts.
If you can't handle the answer , don't ask the question . . . .
you seem to have done a good job of slanting the answers , you guys in politicks . . . .
hmmm , seem to have made a freudian slip , guess I do think of politicians as blood suckers tho' . . . .
you people whip out ad hominem like a cross to protect you from the unholy . . . .
ARE ECO-CELEBS HYPOCRITES ?
_ Yes
_ No
what's the problem . . . .
I think it's fair to demand that they walk the talk. Leonardo Di Caprio has said he's not going to fly in private planes again. Good for him. Global warming is a serious issue, and it requires people with credibility. Otherwise, they become too easy targets of "global warming deniers," who make fun of the celebrities who go from Prius to Gulfstream--thus doing a disservice to the cause they supposedly believe in.
can we get an "All of the above" option added? Because these options are not mutually exclusive, and I agree with them all!
No matter what someone does to appease their (often insincere) critics, there will always be someone to come along and point out that one isn't perfect.
It's all one big, meaningless attempt to discredit the message by attacking the messenger.
They need to walk the talk in a much bigger way than they do now. Setting a role model for very young people is all good and well but anyone with a little wisdom can easily see through the talk if celebs are whisking off to Europe to buy new furniture to ship back and outfit their mansion in one of the chic "in" cities in America.
I'm proud of Leonardo if he meant what he said about private planes. He seems to be walking the talk more than most.
I supposed some of the celebrities, like Leonardo DiCaprio have the right idea, now if they could only follow in the footsteps of Ed Begley Jr.
dont expect much from celebs. but use them to show thier hypocrisy. and ask people not to follow their way.
