Fall Fashion 07: Loyale Introduces Vegan Faux Fur Jacket
by Jasmin Malik Chua, Jersey City, USA on 09.10.07

This fall, Loyale introduces the first-ever organic, vegan faux-fur jacket, perfect for bundling yourself in as the mercury level dips and the leaves conspire to ripen into hues of red and gold. Both the soft, downy faux fur and the coat's lining are made out of 100 percent organic cotton, grown domestically in Texas. (Faux fur is traditionally made out of acrylic and polyester fibers, the manufacture of which is invariably polluting.)
Available in stores for a limited time from September to February, the $425 Costilla Jacket was born out of the New York City-based company's ethos of chic, eco-conscious style.
"Many people purchase traditional faux fur in order to protect animals; however they are not aware of the environmental consequences," says Jenny Hwa, Loyale's founder and designer, in a press release. "This jacket is a unique piece that is consistent with a timeless fashion trend while also taking into consideration the environment and all its various inhabitants." ::Loyale

Actually, according to this article, "faux" fur is often animal fur, too.
But by wearing things the LOOK LIKE fur, one still promotes fur as fashion.
This is not treehugger-worthy, it is greenwashing. It addresses one coat (or 50 coats, or however many they sell), instead of addressing the whole industry!

But wouldn't you want an option like this, in the interim, for people who do want the look of fur?
Maybe it's just the picture, but it looks like carpet.
Is it just my imagination, or is it that every time someone bring out something 'organic' it cost more then the equivalent non-organic product?
Where is all the extra money that is not being used on chemicals going? Is it that hard to get plants to grow with out bathing them in chemicals?
Or is it that organic is the current 'in thing', so you get to pay more for the branding?
There is no "interim"! An interim is a transitional period, but there is no transitional period required to stop making, wearing, and promoting the wearing of fur. Just stop doing it- simple and quick.
If the option exists, fine, but I still contend that a site that claims they are opposed to fur to not promote something that continues to promote the fashion of fur.

Yes, and I also want a pony.
I totaly know where you're coming from - organic always seems to put a little more pressure on hte purse strings. But fair work trades would cost a little more I guess......
And as good an idea as an organic cotton coat is, does it not seem that wearing a coat that represents a dead animal skin is just as bad as wearing an actual dead animal skin...any opinions on this?
I'm a 100% Vegan and I don't eat meat (of course) or wear any animal clothing/accessories. You would be surprise that there are many cosmetic products we use that have to do with some sort of animal. I love fur (faux that is) but it seems to be so expensive and never looks like the real thing.
For those of you wondering what happened to just good ol' fashioned, cool tees, hats, hoodies and etc that are eco and socially responsible -
