Bike Safety Tips From MP Olivia Chow

by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 08.23.07
Cars & Transportation (bikes)

Member of Canadian Parliament Olivia Chow and her husband, New Democratic Party leader Jack Layton, have been year-round committed bike riders for years. She has prepared a video with bike safety tips, where she demonstrates how to avoid the door prize, deal with streetcar tracks and share the road with cars. However, I can't imagine wearing all the flashing lights that she does at night, she looks like a Christmas tree. It's great to see politicians setting an example. ::ibiketo

Jesus Lady... Go to China Lady! Try riding at night. If you wore all those lights, reflective gear and a HELMET they would think you are handi capped.

There is safety in numbers. How about just making gas prices so high that people can't afford to drive cars. If there was an odd vehicle or two then guaranteed people would be more aware of bikers and thus reduce the number of accidents. That's my plan when I become Prime Minister. Tax Gas, and any environmental polluting machine which includes airplanes as well. You have to tax the things which are bad and reward good behavior.

In any case I'll still sign your petition even though I think it's really ridiculous. Go after something meaningful if you are going to promote biking, how about even number licence plates can drive on even number days of the calender month and odd drives on odd days. Just like they did in Beijing! That's something worthy of signing!

Two weeks ago I saw a motorcyclist riding a BMW R1200GS using an impressive array of lights, very similar to the ones Ms. Chow uses. He certainly made his presence clear, every car driver noticed him instantly! If someone riding such a beast uses those lights, why don't we 'pedal-cyclists' follow the example? Honestly, I prefer to be seen as an eccentric lunatic than not being seen at all!

Dear Mark,
I totally agree to ur point of increasing the fuel prices so that its not at all affordable for majority.
Llike U I was also thinking about this and it came on a "special day"-here in India we celebrate both the increased in price for fuel with effect from today(Rs 58 per liire in Karnataka)and Environmental day at the same time.

Regarding cycles ;dont put any firm rules .We want people enjoying cyles in road safely
