007 House by Rob Paulus

It is hot in Tucson; if people are going to live there they need houses that can cope with it. Tucson architect Rob Paulus thinks about green choices in his buildings and in his practice; he focuses on LEED projects, infill, renovations and adaptive reuse. Employees bike in to work under green powered compact fluorescents and support local businesses. Even those long architectural lunches where so many napkins are sketched on are in local restaurants.

The 007 house is "the slick and cool ideal of a modern bachelor pad."

It is simple but lovely:
"this home went vertical and down below grade to maximize the use of the site. Two insulated masonry walls define the enclosure east and west with floor to ceiling glass at the north and south facing rooms. A large canopy cantilevers out to the south to shade the interior from the harsh desert sun while establishing an edge for the southern courtyard."

paulus3

"Designed as a loft, the interior emphasizes light and space over décor. Detail is relegated to functional components- stair, railing, cabinetry and the juncture of dissimilar materials. Clean geometry defines both vertical and horizontal surfaces to create a tranquil setting for life along a busy street."

Love that stair; oh, to live in a jurisdiction where building inspectors let you get away with it.

"Passive solar in plan and section, the house also captures all rainwater on the roof in a sculptural steel pipe gutter that will spill into a 1000 gallon storage tank to be re-used for courtyard planting."

Who says great modern design can't be green? : )

Also, this looks exactly like the house in the movie "The Island". The house where one of the donors live.

It had that sleek modern look, and I remember the stair. They looked exactly like this one, with no rails or anything under it. Seems to stick right out of the wall. I really liked it for that style.

It looks so much like it. I wonder if it's the same one.

wonder how much trouble it would be to get furniture up those stairs. Maybe you could just use a block and tackle to get the bed, dresser, etc. upstairs. If they had my Cal. King Tempurpedic it would be an all day job.
