In keeping with the Live Earth/climate change theme, the Independent has issued its list of the most important decision-makers with regard to global warming and our future. Two places of honour go to famous treehuggers: Simran Sethi, host of treehugger t.v. and green media star, is number 6. And our own Graham Hill, founder of treehugger, is number 24. They say that "in just three years treehugger has become one of the most respected and clicked-on environmental sites on the web". Congratulations Simran and Graham!
As for the rest of the list: in last year's 100 top Eco-Heroes in history Al Gore was number 9, much to the chagrin of many readers. This year he is number 1,. due to the popularity of his documentary and high profile. Unbelievably, Arnold Schwarzenegger is number 2--because of his commitment to the Kyoto agreement. Third is Wangari Maathai, the Nobel Peace Prize winner, fourth is Sir Nicholas Stern, of the Stern Review and fifth is David Attenborough.
Some interesting new names are included on the list: Dr. Carl Hodges, director of the Seawater Foundation, and scientist investigating the use of seawater for irrigation. Guy Watson, originator of the vegetable box delivery scheme is twelfth and Heather Stephenson of Ideal bite, a green website is fifteenth. Perry Farrell musician and environmentalist is 14th and Carl Hiaasen, the novelist is on because of the way his books expose corruption and pollution of Florida.
