Video Parody of Tesco Supports Local Shopping

by Sami Grover, Carrboro, NC, USA on 07.25.07
Business & Politics

TreeHugger loves shopping local. We’ve previously brought news of the 100 Mile Diet, and we’ve even launched our own 100-mile Thanksgiving Challenge. Now we’ve come across this popular ad on YouTube, produced by Friends of the Earth UK, parodying the commercials of supermarket giant Tesco.

Of course, we’d be remiss not to point out that Tesco has actually made some major moves towards sustainability in the last few years, as we’ve reported here, here and here, but we still can’t help agreeing with Friends of the Earth – life would be a lot less interesting without local shops around. ::Friends of the Earth UK:: via site visit::

My two biggest problem with local shops is selection and hours. My local grocer is only open till 8PM and doesn't carry a good selection. The local farmer's market is only open Tuesdays and Fridays until 6PM and on Saturday it's a tourist trap.

I'm sure that if local shops had better hours, I know I'd rather shop there than a grocery store.

Only open til 8? What is the problem with that?

I agree with Icelander. I live in rural Germany where all the stores close at 6PM and aren't opened at all on Sunday. I truly and deeply miss the 24 hour stores of the US. I'm a huge fan of buying local, but local just isn't competing with convenience and selection.
