Survey: What Do You Do with Obsolete Furniture?
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 07.18.07

Many people are switching to flat screen TV sets, but have owned those specialized deep TV cabinets that were designed for the earlier age of deep CRT displays, either in those wedding-cake entertainment units like the one in the picture (why were they always so traditional and ugly?) or just very deep cabinets that no longer serve any useful purpose.
What are do doing with your old TV cabinet?

How about give to a good-will type organization.
I'm thinking it probably wouldn't be overly difficult to add shelves to the armoir portion, use it for photo displays, or other lighter-weight options. Depending on what the cabinet was made of - not sure you'd want to fill it full of books, but if it was sturdy enough, why not?
I shop at antique stores for furniture. The price is less of a concern. But the ones i buy use real wood. Not that press junk that falls apart, when you move it.
We have the mission-style version of this media cabinet, and we retrofitted it to fit out new flatscreen... that required tha addition of an extra shelf inside, and the removal of the doors and their tracks. So, none of the above.
We bought ours in 1995 for $99 and sold it in 2005 for $25. The buyer said its going in her basement.
I moved mine to the basement. I'm going to convert it storage shelving to keep some things off the floor.
I don't have a deep cabinet for my TV, so I'm not sure how feasible this would be, but what about setting the flat screen TV on hinges, so you can flip it up (or swing it out) and store things like DVDs behind it? Too heavy? Time to think INSIDE the box. :)
