Survey: Are Fireworks History?
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 07. 2.07
In a recent post we noted that fireworks "are often propelled by gunpowder, and the accelerants and heavy metals used for coloration can leave traces in the air and water for days or even weeks after the party is over." and "fireworks heavily contribute to perchlorate contamination of surrounding water bodies." The commenters suggested that we "Lighten up, killjoys - it's just once a year" and "'Greens' are always accused of wanting to go back to the dark ages" In an earlier post Jilted said "Once again treehuggers show how incredibly boring they are." Matthew has noted that some companies are trying to make greener fireworks. Is that another option?

LOL awesome, my cynicism made it into a post.
I voted, but I think the options are pretty lame - most people, and certainly the folks who read your site, would say "It would be better if they were greener" about absolutely any product, and they'd be right. Even the most committed Humvee-owner is unlikely to be saying "The speed and acceleration are just fine, but is there any way you could get it to use more fuel, just for fun?"
personally i just cant find "joy" knowing that my river and surrounding area is being polluted unnecessarily for a 15 minute light show.
Yes they are pretty, and i used to love them, now though i just don't think it worth it.
FYI, Montreal hosts a fireworks competition. Nine major displays in one month. Am I a killjoy if I say it's overkill? The debris falls straight into the St-Lawrence river/seaway and when the wind is right, the smoke wafts across the city.
