Secret, Efficient Power Supplies From Google

by Mark Ontkush, Boston, Massachusetts, USA on 07. 3.07
Science & Technology (electronics)

Google, google, google, google - what don't they have a green pinky in these days? The coolio-video above 'strates how they design the custom, super efficient power supplies for their server farms. Google builds its own machines (and has for some time) using a team of hardware engineers expressly dedicated to the task. With the goal of efficiency foremost in mind, it's no surprise they are leading the pack in this area as well; can you leave some for the rest of us please? ::Ubergizmo

Interesting video, but nothing secret, or even super cool. It looks like all they did was move to single voltage outputs, so saving component count, and laid out the boards differently to improve efficiency.

Seems like a little bit of common sense being applied. Its good that someone is actually taking the effort to apply some common sense :)

Especially given how many new servers are coming online in all the new data centers around the world.

Hmmm, where's the "Secret" and where's the "efficient" ? I haven't heared any numbers quantifiying the efficiency gain or the how much power is being saved...

jump to top Victor says:

It seems to be a problem of reverse compatibility for home computers. There's a whole range of different voltages power supplies have to create and that cant be good for efficiency.

Fire that camera man, mad me dizzy. It was pretty uncomfortable to have to stare at his mouth.
