Lots of Books, No Space?

2007-07-12_131743.jpgThe New York Times is asked "How can I store a big collection of books in a small apartment?" and responds with a couple of ideas:

-adjust your shelves to put them at appropriate heights for different books. “If each shelf has just a few tall books on it, along with many smaller ones, you’re losing out on a lot of vertical space,” said Lisa Zaslow, the founder of a Manhattan company called Gotham Organizers. Grouping books by size saves space and creates a more coherent look.

-store them in furniture like the storage ottoman shown here.

-stick'em in the closet in storage boxes;

-get rid of them by donating them to a charity or a library. Treehugger also recommends Chicago's guerilla book exchange ::New York Times

I have so many books, I could build a house out of them. Hey, that's an idea ! Build a house out of bookshelves and the books will be insulation....

My grandfather (who lived in NYC all his life) had a solution to keeping a giant book collection in a medium-sized apartment.

The books he wanted to keep but didn't need to access very often were stored on simple shelves built into the back of every closet in the house.

These were just made of cheap lumber, and were easy to assemble using the walls of the closets for support (nail a block into each side wall, lay a board across the supports.

This was especially good for small paperbacks.

I had a layer of shelving built all around my house along every wall, but close to the ceiling. Lots of room that way and, some additional insulation !
