I think Slate has missed the point, the Simpson's isn't a world of perfect people, but satire, and that satire is clearly pro-environment.
I have to agree with Kearns; the Simpsons has spent the better part of its tenure offering a unique blend of humor and political satire - mixed in a way to appeal to either side of any issue, but ultimately the message is a clear liberal, pro-environmental one, that is perhaps lost on some, but appreciated by most.
I agree again with Kearns and Jordan, slate has taken the environmental plot of the Simpson's far to literally the whole thing is satire. Some people just don't get it somehow. The Simpson's is main stream though and cant afford to alienate any audience by seeming to be one sided. Satire is a great way to get across a point and I applaud them they are making a green view the social norm. As it should be
I agree. It feels like the people behing making this video are completely unfamiliar with the Simpsons as a whole, as well as the concept of satire.
The Simpsons writers are often highly educated, and indeed parody themselves as the writers of the Itchy & Scratchy cartoon, with Harvard grads who wrote thesis on "life exeprience." If they can parody themselves with such brilliance, how can they avoid parody of dreaded tree huggers composting "pocket mulch" and "not eating anything that casts a shadow." It's an area as rich for satire as any other in the world.
Additionally, Lisa is regarded as the writers "voice" and thus represents their views & philosophies. In this regard they have been bang on the issues for going on two decades.
Yeah they are obviously using irony to show that they truly care about the environment and that people are basically ignoring it... a-duh.
