George Bush on Car Pools

TreeHugger encourages car pools; you get social, save fuel and cut back on greenhouse gases all at once. They were part of the war effort in World War II when fuel saving was critical.

Now its importance has hit home again; in his Fourth of July speech at Martinsburg, W.Va, President Bush discussed the “many ways” Americans can “say thanks to the men and women who wear the uniform and their families”:

You can send a care package. You can reach out to a military family in your neighborhood with a mom or dad on the front lines; you can ask somebody, “What can I do to help you? What do you need?” You can car pool. You can be on bended knee and pray for a soldier and their families.

Jimmy Carter - energy savings as "the moral equivalent of war", what, 30 years ago? I wanna see Dubya in a sweater during his next address!

Carpool Crew makes it easy to find people to carpool with... maybe Bush should sign up and let people hitch a ride in his tax payer funded armored limos.

WE are supposed to carpool. But the AMERICAN auto industry is only supposed to increase fuel economy standards to a mere 35mpg by 2020.

If saving fuel is an issue, why not ask the AMERICAN auto companies to do their part as well?

Or would that be infringing upon another god-given American value: Profit.

The American way of life is not negotiable! Why does George Bush hate America?

jump to top Windsor Wilder says:

Bush's staffers are telling 'our fearless leader' that he needs to start with the "green lingo" because his legacy is one of corporate greed, scandal, and illegal wars.

I doubt his sincerity, and wonder if he will drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge anyway...saying "let's combine it with corn ethanol and call it biofuel!"

I see that you care.If public transit and car pooling are available.I would use it.But as i live in a very rural area.It is not.The closest i ever get to a car pool is once every two months me and the neighbor get together.Hop in the Tahoe suv 4wd and drive 40-45 miles into town for supplies. After blowing $1000 at the communist workers center ( Walmart ).Try finding anything made in the USA anywhere. After we fill it we head home.Knowing we will need to enter " civilized society ".You don't care much for most off grid-rural people. You turn your noses up and snicker.

Carpools take lanes away right when you need it. They increase congestion, which wastes gas. It also causes stress that doctors say causes obesity. Carpool numbers have gone up marginally. Most the time the other riders are kids and couldnt drive anyway - meaning, it didnt take a car off the road.

jump to top orig_club_soda says:

Uhh...so we thank the military by using less gas...so the military is doing what they do for gas...so the war in Iraq is about oil? Oh, I was confused, I seemed to think for a second that the war, limitations on free speech, increased surveilence, corrupt politicians and long airplane lines were because Arabs hated our freedom. Now it all makes sense.

jump to top Surfrock66 says:

so how much pollution does the traffic from having a carpool lane empty, with 4 lanes in a dead stop for hours cause?....ya, carpool lane works......

jump to top Anonymous says:

Actually the U.S. had plenty of gas and oil during WWII. What we didn’t have was enough raw rubber for automobile tires, (Thanks to the Japanese.) So the government rationed gas so people would drive less and not wear out their tires

jump to top David Ferrand says:

You leave the poor lame duck alone.

He's starting to wake the W#^K us and realize that is fate is the same as of Egyptian pharoes.

His name will be struck from every stellae and monument and he will be consigned to the same oblivion as Chester Allan Arthur (Who? A ...president ... who's name doesn't even come up on obscure Jeopardy questions.)

In twenty years we won't remember him anymore than whoever came before Kennedy. (Hint. It wasn't Rosevelt. or ever Truman. :-)

What a fool...

Carpooling will work when corporations own the neighborhoods their employees work in. Otherwise, logistics generally prevent it.

Other mass transit would be work better, but you would have to make either end of the destination a mall with free reserved parking.

All the HOV does in our area is force rush hour traffic into fewer lanes.

Hmm, Toll plan may leave many in jam:
