A team of Dutch designers recently revealed a plan to build a floating city on Shanghai’s Huangpu River. If built, the city will debut during World Expo Shanghai 2010. The floating city will have many green elements — it will use the water of the river for cooling and it the city will make use of renewable energy. However, one has to wonder if matters like sewage treatment and impact on the river environment have been addressed. The model of the construction on display at Shanghai Sculpture Space, has five honeycomb-like balls, one big one surrounded by four smaller ones, functioning as a 3D cinema, pubs, a shopping mall and theater. The biggest honeycomb will have a restaurant at the top floor 80 meters above the river, the report said.

The project would be part of the Expo’s “Urban Best Practices Area,” where cities have been invited to display their own innovative technologies to improve urban living conditions, said Eric Verwaal, of the Dutch Consulate-General in Shanghai.

"People living in the floating city can contact with people outside conveniently", said Michiel Fremouw, CEO of the designing company Deltasync. He went on to say that residents will be able to fish easily from their homes.

I'm a little concerned about how green this floating city will actually be.
When a power plant dumps its cooling water into a river, it has a pretty dramatic negative effect on the local ecology, I can't imagine cooling an entire city would be much different...
And what about sewage treatment, stormwater runoff, etc. How is that being handled?

how is this an "urban best practice"? all this does is create the need for a lot more infrastrucutre, which is one of, if not the worst urban practice.

This may require a lot of infrastructure, but with rising oceans and perhaps dramatic climate change coming our way, I think this is a key experiment. And who better to do it than the Dutch whose entire country may be submerged under water in the (near) future.

if homes are built on water surely land mass could be used for building such as industry and boost economic development. waste could be transported to treatement areas which could be built near the floating island

Floating city is very feasible. I am a naval architect designed a whole city that can float in very deepwater and do not heave for severe storms. I have a USA patent. My original design has eight wings each 100m x 600 m and it has a center of attraction at the middle with school, auditorium, police, hospital, city hall, court, what not. One wing is dedicated for aircraft landing. Wave energy is utilized for power; all cars are electrical with public transport system. There is fishing, water purification, gardens, agriculture what not. There is a Disney land and there is a Las Vegas on board. It is a cool place for vacation, stay, live and work. MSC can keep their employee there and develop software industry there. All the best expert would be on board and live in a place of solitude and peace and enjoy and more productive. No crime and well balanced place. It is completely shelf sustained. Any one seriously interested can contact me at naganus@yahoo.com.

Floating city is modeled 1:75 scale and is tested for sever storms in deepwater. It has large deck pay load capacity with heave natural period over 25 sec and roll is 45 sec and pitch is 5 sec.

It is designed according to ABS-MODU and is mobile with 10knots.
