The New Climate Poll Numbers Are In From Pew

"There has been a double-digit increase [14%] in the proportion of Americans who say environmental problems are a major global threat - from 23 per cent to 37 per cent, according to a comprehensive survey published this week by the Pew Center in Washington. The Pew survey bears out the fact that concern about the environment is still sharply lower in the US than in any other advanced industrial country, with the exception of the UK. [italics are ours] In every other Western European country large majorities view global warming as a serious problem, ranging from 57 per cent in Italy to 70 per cent in Spain.
The survey of some 10,000 people worldwide by the Pew Global Attitudes Project found that public opinion in Great Britain mirrors the US view. In the UK, less than half (45 per cent) say it is very serious while another 37 per cent rate it as a somewhat serious concern. In 34 of the 37 countries surveyed by Pew, the United States is named by a majority as the country that is "hurting the world's environment the most.""
All polls are fairly imprecise, so, to make a metaphorical point, we're rounding the US and UK to a third of respondents taking climate change very seriously. Apologies in advance to the serious analysts over at Pew Charitable Trusts.
In the USA, a third of the herd is senses danger and signals the rest, wanting to communicate, wanting to act collectively for the common good. The remainder is divided between those who disdainfully glower at the commotion or are too busy chewing their daily quota of celebrity cud. For that remainder, there's a decent simile to the health care professional, employed, say, in the cancer clinic, who smokes or chews tobacco. Also the professional climate denier paid by a Think Tank to pretend the that increased solar radiance is the real worry.
It's the presently disdainful ones which will slowly sense the increasing man-made danger, not by rational analysis, but in the manner that "gapers block" makes speeding motorists slow down to stare at a crash scene. It is the possibly false analogy of the drought, the hurricane, the flood, and disease that will empower them to action. Must they get the probabilities right to help the world see a positive outcome? Not really. Watch now as the propagandists try to play emotions the other way.

I think all this poll proves is how the media works. People are mindless sheep who believe what they see on the news. This poll confirms that popular culture, and indeed the news media, are simply focusing more on global warming.
