There is a prize for everything, so we should not be surprised that all the ad execs get to toodle off to Cannes for the Cannes Lions Outdoor Grand Prix, to chose the world's best billboard. First prize went to this solar powered billboard for NedBank in South Africa- The "power to the people" campaign literally does just that.

According to AdAge, What ultimately swayed the jury in the favor of the NedBank "Power to the People" work was that the solar power being collected by the billboard was helping to power several community buildings, including a schoolhouse. That the work made a difference in the community made all the difference to the jury. At a time when it is so common to have short-term promotions, that the "work that continues to work and continues providing" was key, said jury chair Jean-Remy Von Matt, founder-chairman, Jung Von Matt, Hamburg. ::Adme.ru

What if a bank really did give power to the people?

They'd call it a credit union.

Join one and put the profit in your pocket.

This is going to be a big thing - solar panel theft! We're gonna hafta deal with it. It's going to drive up the price of insurance, create a new type of suburban crime, etc....

Perhaps construct penels with the inverters attached, which would make them much bulkier and more difficult to move around (but which would make them far more valuable on the black market)....or instead put more manufacturing effort and investment into making super-efficient inverters (which would live inside the house) so that when the theives steal the panel off the side of the house, they're leaving a lot of the value-added behind.

Rob,
I've wondered why solar panel theft isn't more common, especially with the large number of protable construction equipment signs using them, but I imagine the average thief doesn't have a clue what they cost.

Roof mount is kind of hard to steal without people noticing, and I am considering the back yard on a pole mount so it can track, but I can assure you when I make such a large purchase theft protection will be part of my concerns with a mounting location!

Eh, solar powered billboard? So they avoid pollution from some other power source, but the billboard adds visual pollution and light pollution. Goodbye stars. They should at least point the light fixtures downward to lessen light pollution into the sky, and the downward lights would probably be more usable by the local people.

please i would like to know more about the solar powerenergy supply to the billboard system.

i want to get you involve in my project.

i want to provide solar energy to optimum exposures billboard here in Nigeria.
