Mayor Newsom tours the Hetch Hetchy reservoir--a major source of water for the Bay Area

First plastic bags, now bottled water; San Francisco is certainly setting an example. Mayor Gavin Newsom signed an order this week banning the use of City funds to purchase single-serving bottled water. The Mayor told Newsweek:

The transportation and distribution, developing the plastic for the water bottles, the cost of the water, has a huge environmental and economic impact....the difference between bottled water and Diet Coke is that you can’t get Diet Coke from the tap. It’s not like any other bottled liquids. These people are making huge amounts of money selling God’s natural resources. Sorry, we’re not going to be part of it. Our water in San Francisco comes from the Hetch Hetchy [reservoir] and is some of the most pristine water on the planet. Our water is arguably cleaner than a vast majority of the bottled water sold as "pure."

Way to go, Frisco!

Those " San Francisco values" are looking better and better.

This is good. Now the government officials and agencies who legislate fluoride into the water supply will be forced to drink it themselves.

Fluoride is added to San Francisco’s water supply (and 2/3 of US public water supplies), not to purify it, but to prevent tooth decay in tap water drinkers. Modern science shows it is ineffective, harmful to health and a waste of tax dollars.

Fluoride chemicals are silicofluorides - waste products of the phosphate fertilizer industry. They are dumped unpurified into the water supply. They are allowed to have trace amounts of lead, arsenic, mercury and other contaminants.

See: http://www.nsf.org/business/water_distribution/pdf/NSF_Fact_Sheet.pdf

Studies link silicofluorides to children’s higher blood lead levels which, in turn, are linked to higher rates of tooth decay.

The statistics prove that tooth decay is on the rise along with fluoride over dose symptoms - dental fluorosis

So drink up San Francisco government officials and make sure your kids do, too. If you are buying bottled water at home to protect your family, you should be protecting all San Franciscans by ending water fluoridation.

I look at that photo and think, what if all that water and the dam were gone? You'd have a valley that is more spectacular than Yosemite, an unsurpassed wilderness that was wiped out in one of the largest environmental boondoggles ever.

That's overstating it a little. And San Francisco is one of my favorite cities anywhere. But, calling the Hetch Hetchy reservoir pristine is not the whole story.

Point being: there are no simple solutions. If they actually took out the dam, San Franciscans would run short of water (and might have to use bottles).

Ah, we see the REAL reason he's upset. He's anti-capitalism. A typical socialist liberal point of view.

I say hooray for San Francisco. Nyscof, I think you should look at the bigger picture here: the amount of pollution caused by bottling and shipping the water over from a place like Fiji and dispose of the impossible to degrade plastic bottles is, I believe, a much bigger problem than fluoridation of tap water. Yes, if fluoride does turn out to do those things, then yes, we should start to work on that. But to rail bitterly against San Francisco for doing something noble and unheard of in any other American city I believe is missing the point.

And you wonder why the population in these areas is falling. These people are nuts!I live in an area where the water is fine at the source, but by the time it gets to and through our building I would not drink it

If the empty bottles are such a problem, recycle them.

What are they going to do about all the people they will put out of work?

jump to top H says:

Gavin Newsom has become my new personal hero! First plastic bags and NOW water bottles! I just ordered 4 reuseable aluminum water bottles from reuseablebags.com and I can't wait to get them! I love our tap water where I live so not being able to buy bottled water won't hurt me!

jump to top random girl says:

how stupid! does anyone realize that soda producers usemore than twice the amount of water to produce a single bottle of soda than any bottled water! and their bottles use more resin than any water company to produce their bottles that are scattered all over our highways?
Why I ask you are soda companies being ignored in this bann, if these cities are so concerened about being green... this is pure hyprocicy

It amazes me at the wide array of biases and misinformation on ALL sides concerning this argument and many others. Ignorance is the real problem...with most things.

Collectively we can't get out of our own way...we're so educated, opinionated, and arrogant, we can't find balance.

Regrettably your neighbor

jump to top s.smith says:

awesome. i live in san fran so i know what he's talking about. water from the tap, believe it or not, tastes even better than bottled water here. and to top it all off, there's fluoride added in there to help our teeth. however, i have to say that banning plastic bags is pretty advanced in terms of our resources and cutting down trees faster than they can grow.

jump to top wilson says:

If you can make it law
to ban water...

Why cant you make it law
to recycle the bottles?

jump to top Anonymous says:

they didn't ban buying water bottles, just the use of city funds to be SINGLE serving water botttles.

makes sense.

jump to top Jess says:

$1500 gets you a state of the art filter that self cleans and good for about 6-8 years without changing the cartridge, it filters water, takes out salts and other chemicals and perfect for drinking, for those who own....

jump to top Dan says:

Exactly. It is referring to the poor use of city funds. Many of you argue why not recylce instead of polluting our land, and I agree, but you must know that it actually cost more to recycle.

jump to top mad says:

If you feel that tap water is unsafe u can always boil it. Or u can buy those big 5 gallon jugs because when water is finished on those, the water company takes it back, cleans it and fill it again with water. This is what I do in my house,I don't drink tap water but I buy 5 gallon jugs, when they finish I either give it back to the company or go and fill it at a grocery store like Walmart.
One person raised a question of economics, about people being put out of work. The truth is that these waster bottle companies are owned by much larger corporations like Pepsi and Coke.Losing a water business won't put that big of a dent in their profits.
The point of the matter is to raise awareness about the grave damage we cause to our environment every time we buy one of these bottled water. It actually uses more water to make the plastic for the bottle than the water that actually goes inside it.
At work we have no water only bottles from vending machine so I make sure that I bring my own water and not buy from the vending machine.

jump to top Thomas says:

As a Bay Area native, the tap water is so good that Aquafina and Desani battle it to sell to us. But there is one issue that I have when it comes to protecting ones self from sickness when you deal with handing water to people, cleanliness of drinking water faucets because we all know that they are not the pristine place to get water. Also as someone who has worked in city government in the Bay Area, there is a push for cities to enact and establish a multitude of green policies. Some of them costly and some of them so large that it would be impossible to implement. I understand that cost of water is high but that is what you get when you pay for safety. So when you see people suing the city because of contaminated faucets and water being hnaded out, $58,000 is not a bad price to pay vs the millions they may be out.

jump to top Anonymous says:

I used to drink nothing but tap water all the time - I mean why pay for bottled water when I can get it free from the tap. I laughed at people who bought their water. What a waste of money, I thought.
Then, one year ago I suddenly developed horrible acid reflux. After changing my diet several times and ending up removing coffee and eating nothing spicy without a change, I broke down and bought over-the-counter meds. Eventually they became ineffective and the thought of being on medication the rest of my life was not acceptable to me. I started looking for a natural cure. I researched on the internet and started with adding vinegar to my diet. I ate pickles, drank small amounts of apple cider vinegar mixed with water and even drank the pickle brine. It helped, but I still experienced acid reflux and it was affecting my health. I couldn't get a good night's sleep and I was afraid it was damaging my throat and teeth. I kept researching. Then I saw a blog in which a person had stated that they began drinking nothing but bottled spring water and that it cured their acid reflux. I thought it was crazy, but I decided to give it a try. Within 2 weeks of drinking nothing but bottled spring water, my acid reflux completely disappeared. I couldn't believe it. At my next doctor appointment, I asked about it and she told me that all the chemicals and chlorine that are put into the city water can be very damaging to our systems. She was not surprised at all that my acid reflux was gone due to not drinking the city water.
Please read this article for more info:
http://www.reflux-relief.com/
I am a firm believer that my acid reflux was caused by the city water I was drinking.
I'll never go back to city water and if I have to have bottled spring water shipped to me in bulk, I'll do it.

Despite the Hype, Bottled Water is...
Neither CLEANER nor GREENER Than Tap Water

Recycling water bottles is a tough job. Different types of plastics are very difficult to sort, and can’t be recycled together. Common plastic additives such as phthalates or metal salts can also thwart recycling efforts as can too high a ratio of colored bottles (such as Dasani’s blue containers) to clear bottles. Because of the challenges, many recycling centers refuse to accept plastics. In fact, a fair amount of America’s plastic recycling is done in Asia, where laxer environmental laws govern polluting factories and fuel is spent in international transport.

According to a report recently released by the California Department of Conservation (CDOC), more than one billion water bottles are ending up in the state’s trash each year, representing enough plastic to make 74 million square feet of carpet or 16 million sweaters. Darryl Young, the director of CDOC, says only 16 percent of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) water bottles sold in California are being recycled, compared to much higher rates for aluminum and glass. “It’s good people are drinking water, but we need to do more outreach to promote recycling,”says Young.

Fine. I just love the beautiful mission oriented pic in the helo...Reminds me of Robert Duvall in "Apocalypse Now (of course without the worn gardening gloves that a real man would wear)." Wow so serious..Great symbolism over substance. His hypocrisy knows no bounds. Why?

The great crusader and his city dole out thousands upon thousands of PLASTIC hype syringes that get used by drug addicts WHO STEAL, and then have to deal with disposing of these BIO FREAKING hazards. This of course is paid for by "Investing" your TAX dollars into "partnerships" with the "Stakeholders" in your community. Let's all "celebrate" and "embrace" this type of plastic infusion into our community, but bring down t he rain and thunder on freaking plastic that contains healthy stuff. MY God...

The real problem is ignorance. But the cause of ignorance is not merely lack of eduction. The fluoride damages the hypothalamus and pituatary gland, hurting people's memory and attention span, making them ignorant no matter how often you tell them the same information and reasoned arguments to refute their stupidity.

City officials in San Francisco aren't being forced to drink tap water, they are just being forced to buy their own bottled water like most other people.

The company I work for provides filtered water and I also filter my water at home. I also live in a city that doesn't fluoridate, so chlorine is the main problem with the water.

I also use non-fluoride toothpaste and have found that my mouth feels cleaner as a result. Fluoride hurts the gums and interferes with the natural saliva protection systems because the body decreases saliva production to avoid fluoride uptake. Fluoride is a poison not a nutrient. The body craves chocloate and sugar after consuming fluroide or chlorine because they are used to help excrete the poisons. The combination of chocolate/sugar and fluoride/chloirine causes acne because the body uses the chocolate/sugar nutrient to remove the fluoride/chlroine poison, excreting through the skin. That is why fluroide is not in breast milk - its a poison not a nutrient. Neem, Pelu, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide are all better and can be used in rotation to destroy all germs in the mouth. Filter your water too if you are on a tap or have natural fluoride in your water.

If the mayor really wanted to help public health, he would stop fluoridating the SF.

jump to top John D. says:

Water that comes from your main reservoir Hetch Hetchy is not filtered, yet fishing is still allowed from the shore. How can this water be classified as pure, when there are people who have access to the water, quite laughable really.
