We were flipping through a twelve year old book on the Japanese art of Chindogu, invented by Kenji Kawakami and published as 101 Un-Useless Japanese Inventions. Rule Number One is "A chindogu cannot be for real use. Inventions claiming to be Chindogu must, from a practical point of view, be completely useless."
However with the passage of time what once seemed useless can become quite sensible, like the Personal Rain Saver. As the author said: "No one has any illusions about the value of water as a natural resource. Yet all of us watch hundreds of gallons washing off our umbrellas into the gutters every year. I seriously think this is a great product! Not only useful, but a great awareness-raiser for onlookers (who, I admit would probably giggle). My question is, does anyone know where I might actually order one of these? I couldn't find it anywhere on the Internet.
