New Collection by Plusminuszero

Naoto Fuksawa's company Plusminuszero released its new collection of everyday objects yesterday. The pieces, which include a coffee maker, a space heater, and old-school digital calculators, have a distinctly 80's feel that refrains from overshadowing Plusminuszero's iconic minimalism. The toaster is the greenest of the bunch; with one slot, it saves the energy that would otherwise be wasted on an empty slot when you just want one slice. Despite the collection's thoughtfulness and quiet beauty, each piece seems to be made from molded thermoplastic, as they have been in previous collections. Fuksawa has spoken before about creating design that “dissolves into behavior”; it's a shame that his materials won't dissolve into the earth for a long time.

I think you're stretching a bit here with the toaster's green credentials. With one slot is it less efficient when you want 2 slices?

Wrt to the toaster, it's a nice idea and it is stylish, but still, what is so hard about designing a two slot toaster with a switch/button/toggle to turn off one slot when you are not going to need it?

Yeah, not really sure why this is posted here.

On the other hand, there is a way that it could be seen as green.

I have a very high quality toaster that was given to me as a gift, it is probably going to last forever, or at least until I'm no longer around. So given this, it would be kind of a waste to buy a new two slot toaster even if it has an on/off switch for one slot. Instead, I could buy this one slot toaster for when I only need or want one slice of toast and keep the old toaster around for when I need or want more.

But, of course, I'm not sure that the energy saved would off-set the energy used make and ship the thing. Do any of the do-it-your-self folks out there know how to add a on/off switch to a toaster slot?

In any event, the toaster folks need to get on the stick and design a two slot toaster with an on/off switch for one slot for people who are buying their first toaster or when their old toaster breaks. Time to write a letter or two, I guess.

You make a good point about the toaster- a selector switch and two slots would be the most efficient option. I'm trying to dig up more info on the specific products; can anyone help translate the Japanese on the product site?
