Inflatable Roof Rack

handirack.jpgFollowing from my rant earlier this week about fuel efficiency, I bring news of another way to decrease your gas usage. If you reguarly use a roof rack to carry bulky items around, then you probably leave it attached to your roof all the time. The problem is that this uses a lot more fuel, anything that interupts the aerodynamic lines of a car will - even leaving a window open will make a significant difference.

The HandiRack is an inflatable roof rack which is easy to put on and take off, and takes up hardly any space in the car when stowed away. This means that you are more likely to only have it fitted when you need it, and save fuel. Another bonus is that it looks like it fits any car, which means that you can lend it to people, or take it with you when you buy a new car. ::Auto Blog Green

for a greener way to get a temporary roof rack...

  • Find ~12" x width of your car of corrugated cardboard.
  • Score it at three equal divisions lengthwise
  • Fold at scores into a long triangular tube with the open side overlapping.

Two of these and some tie-down ratchets, and you're ready to go!

*note that I'm not this wise - they give something similar away at Ikea for people without roof racks.

Check out the Bump-A-Rack. This is a low profile, removable roof rack that can be used on all vehicles. And you don't have to blow it up. It saves on fuel since you only put it on the roof when you need it. Also it can be used as a door bumper to protect against dents and dings when packed in a garage.
