Historic Sites in Danger

Important landmarks around the World are in danger from the effects of climate change, according to the World Monuments Fund. The organisation has published a list of the 100 most endangered sites, which includes neighbourhoods in New Orleans, the Church of the Holy Nativity in Bethlehem, areas of Iraq and Machu Picchu in Peru.
Although these lists have been published before, every two years in fact, this is the first to cite global warming as one of the forces threatening the monuments.
Bonnie Burnham, president of the fund, said, "On this list, man is indeed the real enemy, but, just as we caused the damage in the first place, we have the power to repair it." As well as highlighting those sites in danger, the fund donates money to help save them.
Over 75% of previously listed sites are now no longer in danger, so it seems that they have a positive impact in these matters, although it would perhaps be unfair to ask them to solve climate change on their own. :: ENN
