TreeHugger loves green roofs; they can be beautiful architectural elements or "a rooftop food production system that meshes the technologies of aquaponics, vermiculture, rooftop water harvesting, and solar-powered air moisture harvesting." Green Roofs For Healthy Australian Cities has posted a photo gallery of buildings all over the world with green roofs. We have seen some of them on TreeHugger before but many are eye openers. See them all at ::Green Roofs For Healthy Australian Cities via ::Metaefficient

That’s not just green roof that’s a bushy roof. Aren’t you afraid waking up with a snake on your bed with you one day? What if the roots of those green things grow through the internal structure of the whole house?

Amazingly beautiful buildings that incorporate excellent style and nature. Whenever I think of green roofs, however, I think about what could have been produced in energy with photovoltaic panels? I guess a mixture of the two would be ideal in a bright, green future.

Thanks for the link Treehugger! So many different styles, this is a really inspirational site where everyone will find something they like.
When I build my own house someday the roof area will have competition from a roof garden/ balcony, solar hot water panels, maybe skylights and space for solar PV panels once they come down in price. I certainly won't have any room for corrugated iron or tiles up there! Given that the price of land and houses is very high (unaffordable for many) in western countries now, it is a real waste to have all that unused roof area up there just for draining rain.

Green roofs help to bring back the natural balance into our cities. Snakes are a part of that ecosystem (in some areas), but you can't have the one without the other (i.e. butterflies without silkworms)...
Be assured, advanced green roofs are 100% save and durable. They usually incorporate a root resistant waterproofing or an additional root barrier. Of course, you should chose an experienced planner and builder/contractor, because even the best product (green roof system) depends on good craftsmanship.
Green Roofs prolong the life expectancy 3-5 fold or more of all layers below, as those are not exposed to the sun, UV radiation, thermal stress (night-day) etc. Thus, green roofs protect our buildings (and save money).

I think these are absolutely BEAUTIFUL buildings. and would love seeing them in the city of toronto in the next 10 of 15 years. They look organic, and not as bulging as larger co-orperations. In total, they are a fantastic idea. (Y)
