Edible Plates from Sebastiano Oddi

by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 06.30.07
Design & Architecture (dining room)

Sebastiano Oddi, graduating student at the University of Brighton, cooked up the idea of the Edible Plate:

"Mange2 is an edible picnic container for two people. By manipulating the gaseous structure of bread Oddi has designed a wholly edible container that results in near zero waste. It currently has been produced in 8 different flavours.

It can be seen and perhaps tasted at New Designers in London July 12-15. via ::Notcot

Ah, now this reminds me of the soup-in-a-bread-bowl sold by a local bakeshop here. Lessens the need for waste and cleanup.

So, it is two pieces of bread? So, no offense, but he made a big sandwich, why is this on TreeHugger?

Years ago when I was a baker, we used to create similar items - baskets made from bread etc. but it was a "pasta dura" type process and rock hard by the end of baking - not particularly palatable :). Nice idea from Sebastian, just curious about the name he's chosen for his creation that some may find offputting:

mange (mānj) n. Any of several chronic skin diseases of mammals caused by parasitic mites and characterized by skin lesions, itching, and loss of hair.

- if this goes to market, hopefully it will be under a new name :)

Um, mange means eat in French. Like manger= to eat. Not mange on an animal.

The product is called Mange2 because it is an edible container for two people to eat. Mange tous is alos the name of a type of vegtable which literally translates as eat all. The two plates have handles on them that allow the two to be held together along with some 'bread bolts' i devloped to hold the bottom section together. The bread is very palatable as is not dry and crusty. If anyone has anymore questions please email me. My website will be up and running soon so check it out for other edible products. Many thanks for everyones comments good and bad./..Seb
