Why Cities Work: There Are Things to Do

For all my griping, there are things that I love about Toronto. In Nathan Phillips Square, the forecourt of City Hall, where you are not allowed to breathe without a permit, hundreds of kids go at it with pillows. Liablility? Broken necks? Battery chicken feathers? Cleanup costs? There are so many reasons why this should be wrong and yet so many people are having such a good time doing such a simple thing. I love it.
We don't need Wiis and Playstations and Second Life sucking watts to have a good time, we need enthusiasm, intelligence and urbanity to make places where people can get together and have fun. As always, congratulations to Lori and Kevin at ::Newmindspace

Right. Could never happen in the States. And certainly not a Red state!

Like hell we do! San Francisco and NYC both had pillow fights in their respective Union Squares in February.
Pittsburgh had a pillow fight last fall, I don't know what you're talking about.
I have removed a line from the post where I questioned if this could happen in the United States, where I thought lawyers and lawsuits kept people from having fun in public places. Clearly I was wrong and apologise to to the lawyers.
so... destroying a bunch of material goods for no practical reason doesn't cause energy consumption?
...sorry, Lloyd, couldn't help myself. :)
