HauteGREEN 2007 Sneak Peek: Staach's Cain Collection and Q Collection's Contract Textiles

The final installment of TreeHugger's HauteGREEN 2007 Sneak Peek series has arrived; to celebrate, it's a two-for-one design extravaganza. In true sustainability synergy, the Cain Collection Sofa by Staach and Contract line of textiles by Q Collection have come together for this display piece, though both have sustainable design chops in their own right. To build the sofa, Staach employs sustainably forested Birch and Poplar from New York, Pennsylvania and New England, adding natural latex foam and organic wool cushions and batting, and finishing it with low-to-no VOC, water-based lacquers and paints. The fabrication of the pieces is designed to be simple and done completely in-house with a limited use of only two tools; the designers have chosen to substitute human labor for more electricity (and a higher carbon footprint). When it comes to the textiles, Q Collection's rigorous sustainability standards combine with a sophisticated modern aesthetic impressively enough to be featured in the show for a second year (check out last year's Sneak Peek here). The textiles are made from eco-polyesters that are 100% recycled or 100% recyclable and antimony-free. The saturated colors are achieved with non-toxic, optimized dyes. The collection has MBDC Cradle to Cradle Gold or Silver certification and will contribute to the accumulation of LEED points in the areas of recycled content, indoor air quality and (depending on location) use of regional materials (they're sourced here in the US).
