HauteGREEN 2007, an exhibition of the best in contemporary sustainable design and home furnishings, is coming to New York from May 19 - 22, during the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (we mentioned it here). This is the second year of the sustainable showcase, and TreeHugger is happy to be involved; Graham Hill is one of the curators, and here on the site, we'll be taking a sneak peek, much like last year, at some of the designs that will be featured at the show (our pals at Inhabitat will be looking at some as well). There'll be something from our friends at Q Collection, a brand new look from Peter Danko (both part of the Best of TH: Sustainable Designers collection) and many more modern, sustainable designs that help prove that green design can be good design. So stay tuned for some examples of beautiful sustainable design; first up, a chest of drawers from the designers at Art with Function.
Inspired by Japanese craft and the traditional workings of cabinetry made by Japanese masters for tea ceremonies, jewelry and storage, Art with Function's "Our Flesh & Blood" is constructed from FSC-certified plywood, reclaimed Persian & Afghani scrap wood, repurposed shop cutoffs and water based lacquer. Given that Art With Function draws on several varied influences and diverse backgrounds, the seemingly random form of the chest of drawers makes more sense; the design firm was founded by Eliav Nissan, who studied Industrial Design in Tel Aviv, and is now a collaboration with Holland Seydel, who studied both Architecture and Furniture Design in Colorado and Copenhagen, Denmark. We love the texture and detail on the face of the drawers, and the way the different finishes and grains work together.
