Appliance manufacturer Electrolux is focusing on sustainability for this year's installment of their annual design competition. Students are invited to design household products that go beyond efficient use of materials and resources- the objects should encourage the users themselves to adopt more sustainable behaviors.

"Design is at the heart of the Electrolux brand," says Henrik Otto, Senior Vice President of Global Design. "I'm excited that this year's competition will bring us some innovative sustainability ideas. And who knows? What's impossible to manufacture today might be possible in 2020."

Finalists receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Paris for the press conference and design workshops; first prize also includes 5,000 Euros and a six-month scholarship at one of Electrolux's Global Design Centers.

Didn't Electrolux just lay off several hundred employees in Michigan? I don't think that's the act of a "green" business, Treehugger shouldn't support them. Being green should imply a social conscious as well as an ecological one.
