Bob Geldof Slams Live Earth

Sir Bob Geldof is ragging on Al Gore. The Irish musician, who organized the Live Aid and Live 8 multi-venue rock concerts for famine and debt relief—in 1985 and 2005, respectively—is apparently "furious" to be linked to Gore's Live Earth event, calling it a "waste of time."
"It sounds like Live 8. I'm getting lots of responses from people who think I am organizing it," raged Geldof to Holland's De Volkskrant.
"I would only organize Live Earth if I could go on stage and announce concrete environmental measures from the American presidential candidates, Congress or major corporations," he goes on to say. "They haven't got those guarantees, so it's just an enormous pop concert or the umpteenth time that, say, Madonna or Coldplay get up on stage.
"I hope they're a success. But why is Gore actually organizing them? To make us aware of the greenhouse effect? Everybody's known about that problem for years. We are all [expletive] conscious of global warming."
We'd probably be miffed, too, if someone co-opted our idea without due credit, but isn't he tarring his own Live 8 and Live Aid concerts with the same brush? Maybe he's just upset that he didn't score an invite. There, there. :: AZCentral.com

Jeeez! Relax, Bobby!
Isn't the bigger issue, as Lord Geldof rants, that we really don't need another on of these concerts at all?
I mean really, did we not know about famine and debt relief before Live 8 (which, really, doesn't sound like Live Earth at all, Bob) . And who is unclear whether it is Al Gore and some digital electronic mogul (which I don't believe wouldn't have made all of his money without the good old use of electricity)?
Anyway, remain guilt-free about your footprint in this whole matter, and pass on the whole fiasco — just as I am sure, Bob will be doing.
My hunch is that Geldof has no idea how far behind the UK we are when it comes to awareness on the GW issue. Back off Bob and let us catch up with you guys accross the pond.
Bob assumes that there's actually something practical that mankind can do to influence the alleged warming trend. What a putz.
weeez, there's nothing alleged about global warming. And it's true that it can't be stopped at this stage, but it can be slowed enough for us to have more time to come up with better technology and ways of dealing with it, before most of the planet is uninhabitable.
Go troll somewhere else.
I'm sponsoring LiveHair to benefit aging trendy's who've lost their ability to look cool - haha!
well you cant address this issue to less a crowded room just to get the attention of few. but if you can address this to a million crowd, its not just few will listened. maybe all of you will enligtened. you may have time for listening to concert, music but dont you think you need more time to listened to whats happening to the world
The only time Sir Bob was 'linked' with Live Earth was when his ego got the better of him and he spouted off about it being a waste of time. Whether you agree with global warming or not, it is a great idea for everyone to be more aware of how wasteful we are.
David in Bali, your comment is the funniest thing I have read all day!
Ditto what previous writer said, Bob obviously has no idea how far behind the US is. He should come and spend a week here if he thinks "Everyone knows about the Greenhouse Effect", or watch Fox News.
They only way any of these concerts make a difference is if they raise enough money to do something great for the world.
Awareness is good and all, but one concert, or even three massive concerts, aren't going to change a whole societies viewpoint overnight. They should put all the time, energy, and money towards making actual change!
Mushi, it depends on how you define "we." If you mean the people who read Treehugger, then I would agree- no need for a big concert. If you're talking about mainstream America, there's a long way to go in raising awareness. The best data I've seen is from a Pew Research poll which found that only 19% of Americans are concerned a "great deal" about GW. Compare that to 26% in the UK and 40% in France. Here's the link: http://people-press.org/reports/display.php3?ReportID=280
Aye, Pablo! I did say "we." Okay, from now on I am going to speak only for myself (as I always should).
"I" do not need "a legendary music event with 9 concerts, over 100 headlining music acts, 24 hours of music across all 7 continents." Regardless of the facts of, both, American and worldwide public ignorance to the evidence, (and, thank you very much for the link to the Pew Foundation report), concert(s) of such enormity would do nothing to convince me of any facts. (Well, that is of course, that while the band is playing their set, messages, much like those at Live 8 (yikes! a Live 8 comparison!), traveled over the bandstand stating little tidbits from the ' LIVE EARTH GLOBAL WARMING SURVIVAL HANDBOOK', such as — "Drive with your windows closed, it saves on wind resistance, and thus, fuel." or, "Upgrade Your PC", and, hey, "Don't Use Plastic Bags!")
Arghh! "I' am insulted by such drivel, and hope that the collective "we" (readers of Treehugger, or not) get it together soon enough to stop — another custom written song by Madonna to save the future crisis, and — the distribution of such crap concert swag as the "I (heart) Live Earth" (not THE Earth, mind you, but LIVE EARTH) t-shirts and buttons. (Although, if they are going to be making those foam "drink" cozies, I', all about it!)
"Want to do your part to help spread the word about the climate crisis? Use these Live Earth banners on your own website! Right-click the images below to save them to your desktop. And be sure to check back soon for richer, interactive Flash badges. (You know, the sort of buttons and badges you'd want to put on your backpack or jean jacket if you were a rock n' roll-loving high school student.)" — from Live Earth "Show Your Support" website.
Yes! (Heart)ing Live Earth. One more step for mankind — toward the end of mankind.
(Note to reader: I am not as pessimistic of our future, as I cynical about our present. And, do your best to save your corners of the world!)
Actually, Live Aid, Live Eight, and Live Earth actually sound a lot like the Concert for Bangladesh - the first large-scale benefit concert organized by George Harrison, NOT Bob Geldof.
It seems almost increasingly that Bob Geldof was assassinated about ten years ago and has been replaced with a lookalike....or he is just sore because the very, very, very low ticket sales of recent shows of his, so low that he refused to perform. Either way, Bob Geldof really is just jealous that Al Gore is three years older than him, doing more to positively impact the planet at the current moment, and more attractive than him.
Go Bob.
Live Earth sounds gay.
I think that Bob is right Live Earth is nothing more than a bunch of crap. I will spare you my thoughts on Al Gore and "that" movie but suffice to say that he along with the performers are pulling in trendy idiots who will say one thing today and do another tomorrow and miss the reason for a concert, if there was one to begin with.
Consider www.greenworld.org if you're interested in direct global citizen action with minimum hoopla.
I'd be a little upset too. People think Geldof is sponsoring the thing cause of the name! Bob gives support to causes with tangible results. Gore has no concrete plan. Save the benefits for problems we can solve with money.
And yes George Harrison was the first but I doubt he minded Geldof borrowing his idea to 'feed the world'. George actually got attacked by the press for his effort!! ("Why of all the terrible things in the world did you pick this cause?" George answered, "Because my friend asked me.")
