Al Gore as President: Interview with Time Magazine
by Kara DiCamillo, Newport, Rhode Island on 05.29.07

Will Al Gore run for president? That question is being asked over and over. We recently saw an interview with him on Larry King Live and also read the article in the current Time Magazine in which Mr. Gore’s photo appeared on the front cover. The headline reads: “The Last Temptation of Al Gore: Will he run or not?” The article interviews not only Mr. Gore, but Tipper Gore and Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, who is noted as saying “Like many others, I have tried my best to convince him. So far, no luck.” It seems Mr. Gore has moved on, at least for the time being. With the Live Earth concert coming up in just over a month and the launch of his new book, The Assault on Reason, Mr. Gore has other things on his mind. In addition he’s met with all of the candidates who are running in the upcoming election and has advised them that the climate crisis must be at the top of their list. But some think that he’s biding his time and waiting to pounce. Mr. Gore says that he has enjoyed the luxury of being able to focus single-mindedly on the climate crisis issue and his wife has agreed: “He’s got access to every leader in every country, the business community and people of every political stripe. He can do this his way, all over the world, for as long as he wants. That’s freedom. Why would anyone give that up?” The article alludes to the fact that Mr. Gore is not interested in politics anymore, but in the interview, Mr. Gore didn’t say yes or no. Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google (where Mr. Gore was a senior advisor when it was still a small company), says “My advice is to do whatever he’s most passionate about. Because that is working.” Read the whole story via ::Time

He should run, even if he won't win. That would turn up the heat on the other candidates to make the climate crisis even more important. We do, however, have John Edwards, who, as far as I can tell, has a good plan to address climate change. None of them except Kucinich has said their position on Nuclear energy, hopefully they support it, as there cannot be a real solution to the climate crisis without massive expansions of nuclear energy.
He already gets more attention and respect than some former presidents. I wouldn't discourage him to run, except that he's above the fray, he already has an excellent pulpit, he probably can do more as an elder statesman, and he's in a more defensible position, allowing him to push what he deems to be the most essential issues, without comprimise.
I agree with Alex except on Nuclear power. America has not meaningfully embarked on any sort of conservation approach to energy management. With massive expansion of solar and wind power and it can be done. It won't be easy but it can be done without Nuclear.
A gov't study found that there's enough wind power in a couple of midwest states to power the whole country.
And if we improve the grid with flywheel and capacitor storage capabilities, and add time of use billing to encourage conservation when the grid is taxed, we need never run fossil fuel burning power plants.
Al Gore is a born two faced egomaniac. Keep him away from Gov.
Alex:
There are no safe reactors.
Reactors today use the very rare uranium U-235 as fuel. The most positive reports say that we will only have enough U-235 for max 80 years. Some reports even say 60 years. And that timeframe is with today’s use of nuclear energy. If more countries would invest in nuclear reactors the timeframe will of course be smaller.
Do we want a world where the oil is depleted, and where every country has nuclear reactors but with no fuel, but with enough waste to make thousands of nuclear weapons?
I have no idea what they are called in English but there is a nuclear reactor called bridreactor (Swedish?) that can have the more widespread uranium U-238 as fuel. But at the moment there is only 3 bridreactors across the globe, one in Russia, France and Japan. These bridreactors are extremely expensive to build.
But even if all countries would start to build bridreactors everyone would need to invest in over 9000 reactors across the globe to replace the fossil fuels with nuclear reactors. Building nuclear reactors take a LONG time, and time is not something we have anymore.
Nice article.
That hypeicrit who has three home heated all year round. Not to mention electrial use.He should burn in hell.He is just as spineless as the other politicans. He is not the answer. He only does this for expourse.
i bet he's running. he's just smart enough to stay clear until he needs to step up. Live Earth, his new book, all these talk shows... it's free (and excellent) publicity.
he's going to drop the bomb and sweep up. talk about buyers regret! everyone who voted for bush and is unsatisfied gets a chance to choose door #2 now! and he has very clearly not sad he's NOT running.
he's our next president. i hope.
I'm not so sure about that Alex. It would be poetic justice if he ran and won and I hate to say this, but he probably won in 2000. Moreover, I don't think Iraq or a lot a stuff would have happened if he was president instead of Bush. To be honest, I would vote for him over Hilliary Clinton and Barack Obama if he ran. Even Michael Moore wants him to run.
I think he's made a great career change. Who do the papers listen to more, Brad and Angelina, or Jimmy Carter and GHW Bush? Al's got the best of both worlds now. He has a two pulpits.
That two faced pric .He is a fraud. How much expourse do you want to give him?I would rather vote for an admitted bank robber for bank president. How about hugo chavez for president? At least then he shows his true face.
there cannot be a real solution to the climate crisis without massive expansions of nuclear energy
Your frequent and insistent making of that comment makes me wonder.
Does anyone know when is the deadline for him to run for the presidential elections?
I am 100% behind change and appreciate all the attention Mr. Gore has shed on the issues. I had the opportunity to hear him speak on his new book 'The Assault on Reason' last night.
While I am thankful for the progress he has made on this issue - having Mr. Gore say 'stop global warming' when his energy use in just his Tenn. mansion consumes as much in a month as an average home in a year (link:http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2007/02/charges_counter.html). Furthermore if he has been concerned about this issue for so long, then why has he purchased multiple homes/mansions etc.
I thank him for his efforts - however having him as the head of the movement is much akin to a fat man telling you to go on a diet.
All that said - I still might vote for him.

The silly strawman that won't die.
Say, do you judge the president by how much energy the White House consumes? Should he carpool in a Prius to Camp David? Live in a prefab? Gore's house is more than his house -- it's where he works and where people frequently gather.
The only reason this strrawman persists is because it feeds the "hypocrite!" desires of his political detractors and feeds the simplistic, I-am-just-a-consumer thinking of all the sheeple out there.
You all want leaders, but somehow you think they should wear hairshirts, live in mud huts, and never go anywhere. Here's a thought -- try looking at the bigger picture, you know, the one that actually matters.
Dear Anonymous....
Point one finger out.. point two fingers back. Say what you want obviously.. but who has done more to bring attn to this ALL TOO IMPORTANT ISSUE?? You perhaps? Why bash someone for getting people to talk.. why? What are you solving?? Nothing. The challenge for all of us is to do our best to make changes happen quickly. Changes are happening and they are happening in part to Mr Gore. Now its our turn to rise up and insist that our local, state and federal governments listen to us. Focus on the issue not on judgements. Mr Gore should not run. It would water down all that he has done thus far with those people that we couldnt get to listen before. You will have others start this banter that he used this as his platform. PLEASE DO NOT RUN MR GORE YOU ARE TOO IMPORTANT NOW. YOU ARE GETTING MORE DONE THIS WAY.
I heard he has purchased carbon offsets for all his travel and green energy for all his homes...
If the only attacks against him are personal, I see that as a good sign about his chances for election. obviously character and private behavior have nothing to do with it. Just look at Bush vs. Kerry.
US citizens truly believe whoever they vote for on presidential election day will truly matter the next 4 years! What a joke! As a direct consequence of the presidential elections of 2000 and 2004, the US is now officially a 'Banana Republic' no matter who becomes president in 2008.
You KNOW America is in trouble when...
1. The presidnet, his cronies and ExxonMobil believe they can strip Iraq of its sovereignty and blatantly STEAL its Oil and NG without WAR...
2. A car in a battered garage next to an old house east of Tampa turns up with a trunk and back seat filled with 11 boxes containing 32,000 completed but clearly never tabulated ballots from the '00 presidential election.
3. The 2nd and 3rd. in command of the Elections Board of Cuyahoga County (Cleveland), OH get 18mos. in the Fed Pen for violating state and federal voting laws regarding the countywide recount of 2004 presidential election ballots.
4. Republicans take comfort in an ACTOR as its presidential candidate to run against either of 3 Democratic nominees who are CLEARLY smarter and more capable as professionals much less politicians.
5. The only nations that still appear to like us are keeping their juntas in place with US aid!
America's in dire straights and most of its citizens didn't vote in either of the last 2 presidential elections. To the Republicans I say find a REAL presidential candidate instead of the shills you are trotting out - and believe me, Thompson is NOT the solution for you. He's merely an indication of the problem your party faces. To Democrats, I say stop splitting your pants and get off the fence on Iraq, Iran, Sudan-Darfur, Abortion, Voting Rights, Healthcare, Global Warming, the National Debt,
Medicare, Social Security and a host of other issues that will drag you to the bottom in 2008!
AHnold in California is not doing too badly as an ex-actor and body builder. But Thompson would give Americans the same old garbage they've been forced to eat since 2000 - all because he doesn't have a super smart Democratic wife by his side like AHnold does.
Half of US voters may dislike Al Gore but he has the arrogance, humility, temerity and intelligence Thompson's left in his dressing room! Moreover, Gore would assemble a team that would give the US a fighting chance to rebound from 8 yrs. of laissez-faire domestic and militaristic foreign policy. Mr. Bush proved and now Thompson as Republican savior just goes to show the Age of America is over...
just have to add ,ASM, it has been found that this slander about gores hosue etc is false and was linked back to Exxonmobil
gore buys green power thats doubles his bill, he was not allowed to solar his house til just recently. and he house is fully fitted to save, even if it is an awesomely huge mansion. which if i had the money i would do the same.
gore does what he says, and has alot of ppl trying to dirty his word. i hope in one hand he does not run as ppl will turn and say that his is just green like he talks to sway ppl to vote. its a big act since he has been doing it for 30 years.
gore is super awesome and quickly become my hero.
im serial !
