Transformer Furniture: SDesignunit
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 04. 9.07
Sdesignunit is a Korean industrial design firm that is doing some very neat stuff. With the 2+1 chairs and table, the designers say that
"The young singles ratio is getting increase in the society. These people live alone in small apartment in the city. They would like to have multipurpose furniture for using small room efficiently. There are two chairs and on table. Ordinary these are two chairs and table. But When they watch TV. It can be Sofa. And when they go to sleep. It is going to be a single bed."
They also have designed an electric plug with a built in switch, something TreeHuggers have discussed as a way of reducing phantom loads, shown below the fold.

" Almost every single electronic appliance has a power switch. Observing user, First of all they connect power before they turn on the power switch. But if we can turn on the power as we connect to outlet. This can be more simple way yet safe way of turning on and off your electronic appliance. "::Sdesignunit

It seems odd to me that the switch on the outlet is a story at all. I live now in New Mexico but grew up in New Zealand and every outlet there has always had a switch on it.
A great idea if you don't already have them, but just the norm to me.
LA: it is news to us here in Canada.
Outlet switches are only common in places with voltages higher than 120, to protect people from possibly deadly electrocution.
I am curious, how does the table become something comfortable to sit on?
the furniture look like tetris pieces! i loooove it.
Awesome idea. I love space saving furniture, but I wonder how comfortable it is. It doesn't look very back friendly.
If the rear "leg" of the chairs have pull out memory foam cushions that lay over the table, it might work. otherwise, it looks rather uncomfortable... aside from the oddity of sleeping on my eating surface...sheets or no...
All outlets should have switches! it's a great idea! But instead of an analog switch, how about an RF receiver for a narrow band RF key-fob? A remote control, for an outlet...
