Gingrich: "There Has to Be a Green Conservatism"
by Sean Fisher, Cincinnati, Ohio on 04.11.07

One of the most well-known faces in US conservatism, and a possible Republican nominee for president in 2008, called yesterday for conservatives to take action against global warming. In a debate yesterday in Washington D.C. with former Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, Newt Gingrich retracted his earlier skepticism on global warming and carbon emissions. Gingrich called on his party to step up their efforts and, in politico-speak, apologized for prior inaction, "I'm not going to stand up here and defend our failure to lead." Could this be the start of bi-partisan co-operation on the issue? We sure hope so. :: Boston Globe

As much as I find Newt creepy, this is a good step.
its not because its good for the environment its because its the next economic boom in the united states (is what's hoped) and I've always said this.. once the economics are there the world will adopt it. Thats finally happening.
Politicians will never change. Whatever is popular or getting the press at the moment, that's their stance.
Sadly Patric is correct, politicians just go with the flow of what's popular. For too long environmental issues have been seen as being a lefty value and therefore something that the Republican party must stand aganist because the Dems are for it. It is good to see that more and more the right gets it that this isn't a left/right Democratic/Republican issue but a survival of us all, quality of life, public good issue. I'm sure that vehicle emmission controls were fought against in their day as being bad for business but ya ever get stuck behind an old car whose systems had given up the ghost, now imagine every car smelling like that let alone what it's doing to the air compaired to a modern car. Good thing those laws got passed.
That being said I find Newt creepy too. :-)
Bravo Newt!
What a bunch of swill. Carbon Dioxide is not a polutant and a one degree increase in "average global temperatures" is so far with any scientific margin of error that the term "global warming" is just as much of a leftist farce concocted for limiting liberty as global cooling. Now speak to me in terms of efficiency and long term versus short terms goals and all of the specifics of Newt's speech begin to mean something.
Anonymous above, because you don't understand it (obviously) doesn't mean it's not real. I suggest you read The Weather Makers by Time Flannery, or some of NASA's reports and then make up your mind.
