Celebrities in Small Cars: VW BlueMotion at the Echo Awards
by Sami Grover, Carrboro, NC, USA on 04. 1.07

Treehugger is used to US celebrity award ceremonies promoting greener cars, however, it is nice to see the trend to ditch the limo taking over in Europe too. Apparently, this year’s ECHO Award ceremonies, Germany’s biggest music awards, saw stars arriving in Volkswagen’s efficient (62mpg), and small, Polo BlueMotion TDI, a car we reported on here. We couldn’t find info on what fuel these guys were running on, but we hope it was good, locally produced biodiesel from waste resources. Either way, the smaller, more efficient a car is, the closer we get to kicking our oil addiction. Now if only we could get these people to bike to the awards…

Excellent post! When celebrities set trends like this, it's worth taking notice and applauding their efforts. Showing up at an awards ceremony in a fuel efficient car is very cool - the kind of example a fan would definitely want to emulate.
When it coming to the US? When is the VW diesel Van coming to the US?
Well, not all of us can afford Tom Hank's electric eBox, worth some $80,000 and has a battery that might cost $20,000 a year to operate.
For the rest of us..here's a nearly cost-free battery pack for an electric vehicle..

Wouldn't it be great to see this focus make its way into other avenues, such as NBA players showing up at their games (as they sometimes show during pregame) or Cribs on MTV or Pimp my Ride? People would definitely take notice.
Unfortunately, I imagine that VW would null the warranty if wvo (or any other biodiesel) was put anywhere near the car.
What about the 100 mpg Lupo 3L from the early 2000. (was better than the Smart car and had 4 seats)
car manufacturers seems to forget easily what is fuel efficiency
Luc, the VW Lupo 3.0 could go 100 Km on 3.0 liters of fuel, which = 78 miles to 1 U.S. Gallon.
Unfortunately, VW Stopped selling it due to low sales. It never was available in the us.
Now VW has the Polo BlueMotion TDI (which apparently gets 72 Miles to 1 U.S. Gallon), that is extremely similar to the Lupo 3.0.
(Sorry Treehugger, it's 72 M.P.G. per 1 U.S. Gallon of Diesel fuel ) a great number either way.
For some time VW's seems like they've been looking to slide a smaller (less expensive car) below the Jetta/Golf/Rabbit, so Here's hoping that the Polo comes over again!
FYI I said again b/c the Polo used to be sold in the U.S. as the VW Fox in the 1980s.

the big brains at VW chose to send Canadian the old mk4 golf/jetta with the innefficient 2.0 8v as an entry level car to the VW line-up

anyway, here in Canada, the dealership are falling like leaves as VW couldn't sell any 2007 TDI...
TDIs were 50% of all vw sales in some cities
If you want a celebrity that will bike to an event, why not look up Andy Dick, he may not be the best celebrity in the world, but he does challenge the social norm (for Hollywood).
Woody Harilson would probably do it too, if he got enough emails asking him to.
Just browsing the internet. You have a very, very interesting blog. I'm sure I will visit again.
