World Naked Bike Ride Season Opens

Do you feel totally exposed when you are fighting for your narrow strip of earth in a pack of rushing traffic? Well, it is time to take action. Today is the start of the 2007 World Naked Bike Ride events. WNBR promotes human-powered vehiclists all over the world taking it to the streets to make their point: "It's time to put a stop to the indecent exposure of people and the planet to cars and the pollution they create." If you are a little on the shy side, rest assured. You will not be discriminated against for going only "as bare as you dare". Body painting is encouraged. Alert bystanders today will see rides across Australia and a few other locations with the seasonal conditions for naked bike riding, including Florida and Brazil. If you are shivering at the thought of a nude cruise, then check the WNBR List of Rides to find out if an event is planned in your city in the warmer months of June or July. These kind of actions pigeon hole the movements they are tied to as deviant, subversive elements of society instead of trying to make a possitive change. They sure get attention, but I believe they set back the progress of a movement.
Not to mention, making a whole lot of innocent bystanders violently nauseous! :)
Clothes do have a public service aspect as well.
Hiding your light under a basket, or, your genitalia under your knickers, as it were, and campaigning for bicyclists rights seems quite ineffective, thus it seems like a good compromise to trade the potential scarring of the odd person who has yet to see a penis or breast (or who finds such appendages abhorant) by the publicity this generates along the lines of there is no such thing as bad publicity. It seems like the participants are having a good laugh also.

I just got back from Montreal's first Naked Bike Ride, which was pretty successful for a first go -- 50 participants or so -- and the reception as we pedalled around town was pretty open and positive.The fact there are scads of naked people out *on bikes* and the message that gets out to the media that this symbolises vulnerability to cars, oil dependency and car culture ought to make people think, even for a little while, about the issue.
Hilarious and a great way to get peoples' attention. It's a great idea.

to be offended by other peoples nakedness is bizarre. I suppose it would be OK if they were all catwalk models? I hate body snobbery - let it all hang out naked riders!!
a nude bike ride would be fun and graphic i'd like to show off my breasts to 100,000 sure! it sounds like a lot of fun. i'll arnge one at my city in november absolutely no clothes whatsoever.
