Eco-Tip in Email Signature: Help us Start a Meme!

Take Action (eco-tips)

eco-tip-viral-sig.gif

We all know that many people print emails for no good reason, wasting tons of paper. Lets do something about it, dear reader. Lets start a new internet meme!

Add the following lines to your email signature: "Eco-Tip: Printing emails is usually a waste. Make this tip go viral, add it to your email signature." There's an optional third line for the really devoted TreeHugger fans: "For more eco-tips, visit www.TreeHugger.com". You don't have to add that one, but we'd appreciate it.

This simple two-three line viral signature (if it takes off -- that's up to you!) could save a lot of paper. Most people are well-intentioned, they just sometimes lack information or need a reminder. Please take a minute and add this to your email signature. Consider it your good deed for the day!

A friend sent me a cool signature pic, taken from DANA corp. in Europe, that simply says, "Please consider the environment before printing this email". It's got a little subtle green icon of a tree and winding river or road to the left.
Now if only I could get Groupwise to allow pics in the signature function!

jump to top AGDubbs says:

The tree icon you are referring to is not a pic - its a character out of a font called webdings which is a standard font on most computers. So as long as you can use rich text or html in your signatures you are fine.

jump to top Tim says:

Does anyone have a clue about the origin of the signature "Please consider the environment before printing this email"?

jump to top Mikael says:

I have added the tree logo and a bilingual signature with the text "Before printing this message, think about the environment."

Just did it! Great idea. Keep em' coming!

Done! Glad to have found your website, I look forward to learning about going green. I've been practicing recycling and mulching but didn't know what else to do. I'm looking forward to learning from this website.

I don't know anyone that prints unneeded emails, this is stupid...

editor note: I don't know anyone who does either, but research has shown that LOTS of people do, especially in office environments. Mostly older people who haven't grown up with this digital world, I think..

I just recieved a rejection for a business plan from Virgin and the email had the following note on the bottom:

Help to save paper - do you need to print this email?

I just thought it was good that a big company was doing this.

As a student journalist, I once interviewed a 70+ year old professor who printed every single email he recieved for no good reason whatsoever. He asked me to print something for him from his computer, and I did. One of the pages didn't come out perfectly and he asked me to print the whole thing again. I refused. I told him it's safely in his email and nothing will happen to it. He has no need to keep a hard copy for his records.

Can you tell me how to get the logo through WebDings to add Please consider the environment befor printing this e-mail?

jump to top Kathy says:

Just reading all the comments there. I'm in the middle of looking for a strip-line for my email signature. how do I add the "Please consider the environment before printing this email"? and the little symbol?

jump to top Fiona says:

Hi, I found this as I was looking for a way to add the strapline discussed above to my e-mails.

The long way round to adding this to your e-mail is as follows (as I just did it)

In the main outlook window select Tools, Options, select the Mail Format Tab and click on Signatures, select new and either start with a blank or existing e-mail.

To add symbols or images you need to edit the signature in Word, you do this by clicking Advance Edit and the sig opens up in word (when you're done just close it liek it was a word document, saving changes, and you go back to Outlook).

Choose the point in your e-mail you want to insert the text (I highlighted it from the posts above and copied and pasted it) and then add the little tree bit. You do this by clicking Insert, Symbol, select Webdings from the Font dropdown list and then find the tree, hit insert.

To change the colour and size of the tree (as I had to do) just highlight the tree and format font, select the colour and the size to suit.

Done.

For those who think people don't print emails, I send huge documents to people at work via email every day. It's not just the actual email but the huge Word and Excel files that are attached. This message is great! I added it to my email signature today.

Yes, I am sure this is a very good message to attach to emails, I have seen people printing emails for no reason at all.

Thanks for suggestion on how to get that wee tree symbol before the message, it makes the message more appealing.

Our little way to spread eco awareness.

Cheers
Sree

"P" is the tree picture when you chose webdings font. Then I just change the font color to green.
