Sneak Peek: The TreeHugger Green Index

th-grndx-hqa-01.jpgToday we are happy to preview the brand new TreeHugger Green Index! In partnership with the Daylife people (who we've written about here), we've created the first "green index". It works a bit like a stock market index, except that instead of tracking stocks, it tracks mentions of certain key green phrases in the media. It's a way to gauge how much mindshare certain concepts have and see if they are gaining or losing ground compared to last week. Not very scientific, but lots of fun! After the jump you can see a live version of the TreeHugger Green Index.

Here it is. It's fairly self-explanatory.

New keywords can be added to it (send your suggestions in the comments below), and if you click on an entry, you can see more details and read recent new stories on that particular topic.

This is what we call the TreeHugger Green Index "badge". It shows the direction the index is moving this week and will link back to the permanent home of the TreeHugger Green Index. We'll make code available that you can cut & paste in your blog if you want to show the badge and have an easy way to keep track of the green index.

It is the first time that we show the TreeHugger Green Index in public, and we're hoping that everything is working correctly, but if you notice something wrong, please let us know in the comments (and including your operating system and browser). Also, if you have any suggestions, please leave a comment. Thank you.

Looks like a neat idea.

So, this tracks mentions of green stuff in the media? Do you scan every single newspaper, magazine, news station, etc on the planet or are there a select few you're focusing on? Just curious.

An interesting idea! This can help prevent people from "overbuying" into one idea. If everyone is writing stuff about windmills, and you are looking for something fresh to write about, this could help you find an "undervalued" topic!

jump to top rob says:

i would love to see this as a widget so I can put it on my dashboard.

jump to top Anonymous says:

Are Geothermal, Wave Power, and Tidal Power too obscure? Sustainability? I guess the list could easily get too long.

jump to top Albert says:

Very useful, and enough to make me go and take a 2nd look at DayLife. Can't help wondering about a Mac Dashboard Widget though...

jump to top Mark Allerton says:

How about green building?? Or maybe LEED?

jump to top Preston says:

"Fair trade"
"CFL"
"LED"
"Carbon dioxide"
"Emissions"
"Renewable"

The list of possible keywords is almost endless

You might want to sort them by category once you get into too many more.

jump to top James says:

I agree with Preston.....you need to include Green Building and LEED

jump to top Craig says:

You could add bicycle commuting, public transport improvement. And how about putting some negative ones in there too. You know so we can keep track of what the other side is doing too. It could become a ratio: new highways:new light rail, cheap cars on the market: new cycle path.

I think it's brilliant by the way. Kudos.

jump to top david says:

Kind of cute but thoroughly useless. The combined realities of media concentration, orchestrated press and report releases and the legislative agenda of states and nations means that the "Tree Hugger Green Index" will only be reporting on what we can all gauge and see endlessly repeated anyway.

The very fact that huge swings are the norm and that the components on the list are reported absolutely rather than relatively (which might actually be a useful metric) already illustrate this effect.

I reckon therefore that the "green mindshare" the Treehugger Green Index Badge is going after is simply the marketing of its own website.

Senior Coconut, because something is imperfect doesn't mean it is useless. It might not be what you would want to see, but it can be useful to other people than you.

I would like to see Fair Trade listed and tracked.

Also, can you explain in more detail how you arrive at these numbers?

Thanks for this fun and insightful tool!

I thought you said we could add it to our page? How do we do that?

editor note: You'll be able to do that when we officially release the Green Index. This is just a sneak peek, a beta, preview..

jump to top Josh Rachlis says:

How do I go about adding our business information to your green index

jump to top Catherine says:

I'd like to see 'ethical weddings' and 'green weddings' on there - but maybe I'm biased!

I think this is really useful actually. In particular I am interested in seeing how the index as a whole moves up or down. Sadly, I have already seen signs that some people are beginning to tire of the recent increased media attention on the environment. This might be a good way to keep on top of and help combat this negative trend

jump to top Elizabeth says:

Love this.

I bet there's a way to see a correlation with stocks related to the subjects.

I would like to see the issues that Michigan is dealing with: Water privatization, "dioxin, and PCB's.

Thanks.
