How to Green Your Sex Life
by Jacob Gordon, Nashville, TN on 02.14.07
What’s the Big Deal?
Whether you’re single and playing the field, settled down with that special someone, or someplace in between, most of us consider good, satisfying, sexy sex an important part of this complete breakfast. It might not be the first thing we think of while working towards a sustainable and graceful life on this fragile planet, but there’s a lot we can do to make our sex lives greener. In the process of greening the ecological footprint of our love making, we might also open up some new doors to deeper pleasure, satisfaction, and romantic connection.Guide Navigation

1. Sex toys
According to the Durex Global Sex Survey, 43% of Americans have used a vibrator. Dildos, vibrators, anal beads, cock rings, and the rest of the happy sex toy family can be thrilling and fulfilling, either alone or with a partner, but many store-bought sex toys contain, among other things, chemicals called phthalates, a substance used to soften hard plastics like PVC and provide that jelly feeling. There is quite a bit of concern about the toxicity and health risks of phthalates (in 2004, the EU banned a range of phthalates from children’s toys), especially in sex toys that are used in warm, moist places. One suspicious warning sign is the disclaimer you’ll find on most sex toy packages stating that the device within is for “novelty purposes only.” TreeHugger suggests playing it safe. Look for toys made from glass, metal, silicone, hard plastics, or elastomers. Putting a condom over a suspicious dildo is also a good move. If your sex toy of choice is a power tool, buy a rechargeable one or use your own rechargeable batteries. Rechargeable vibrating toys include the Aphrodite Wand, the Acuvibe, the Lily and Iris from Lelo, and toys from Fun Factory. Check out TreeHugger TV's How to Buy a Green Sex Toy for more.
2. Lube
Whether you feel you need lube or not, a little extra slipperyness can add something extra to any roll in the hay. As you would with any other personal care product, go as natural as possible and try to avoid petroleum products, artificial scents, flavors, and colors. There are even organic lubes to be found. For more info on what to look out for, see How to Green Women’s Personal Care—advice also suitable for men).
3. Condoms
For safer, baby-free sex, nothing beats a latex condom. Vegans looking for a latex option (though derived from trees, most latex has a milk enzyme added) can check out Glyde condoms. The jury is still out as to whether latex condoms are biodegradable and what effects additives and lubricants have on biodegradability. According to most sources, lambskin condoms are biodegradable but are only effective against pregnancy, not STDs. Polyurethane condoms are essentially plastic and not biodegradable. Used condoms are best sent to the landfill. Flushing condoms down the toilet is definitely no good as this clogs pipes, treatment plants, and rivers. So let’s face it, reduce, reuse, recycle just doesn’t apply when it comes to the rubbers.
4. Sexy giving
Getting a stylish and useful gift is always a turn on. Organic massage oils, fair trade chocolate, or a bottle of biodynamic red wine are hot options. For Valentine's, you can even get an all fair trade goodie bag for your lovie. Of course, romance and good sex know no price, and a poem from the heart, a massage, some hot role playing, or a home-cooked dinner for two can be the hottest gifts of all.
5. Green and sexy fun
Sexy play can be green and efficient as well. As seen on TreeHugger TV, showering together can save water (if things get steamier, we suggest taking it to the bedroom and not leaving the shower running). In the winter time, some nice warm loving before bed can get the bedroom toasty, meaning the thermostat can be lower (see How to Green Your Heating, for more). A nice bike ride for two is a fossil-fuel-free way to get the blood flowing and can also be quite stimulating, especially for the ladies. And of course the classic candle-lit dinner is a delicious way to set the mood and save on energy bills.
6. Bamboo in bed
If you’ve never experience bamboo bed sheets, you’re missing out. Bamboo fabric is silky and slippery (but not so slippery you’ll slide out of bed), wicks moisture, has natural antimicrobial properties, comes from a rapidly renewable resource, and is super sexy.
7. Eco-undies
Slinky, slippery, sexy. These are all good things when it comes to some sassy skivvies for the bedroom. Organic cotton, hemp silk, bamboo, and other renewable fibers make ultra-sexy lingerie and underwear. When browsing around, go for quality, not novelty. Buying a bedroom outfit that will be used only a couple times isn’t a great buy. Face it, unless you're famous, nobody on Ebay is gonna buy those crotchless panties, even if you just wore them once. We suggest shelling out the extra bucks for something classy, sexy, and sustainable that can be donned when the mood is right for years to come. For something on the exotic end, check out Enamore and g=9.8. For sensible and simple, look at Buenostyle and American Apparel. For something in between, try GreenKnickers.
8. Sweeter juice?
There are some very strong rumors going around that vegetarians have the best tasting love juices (though some items from the vegetable kingdom you may want to avoid, like asparagus and garlic). If you aren’t already a veggie-lover and there’s a romantic occasion/hot date in your future, give the veggie or vegan diet a try. Even if it does nothing for your flavor, you may score points for being a good steward of the planet. The meat industry is immensely resource intensive and accounts for 70% of the water pollution in the US. Reducing your meat consumption is one of the greenest things you can do. Plus, many triathletes and other super-people swear by a vegan diet for prolonged endurance (always a good thing). For a very funny but totally explicit investigation of the food/body fluid connection, read Hank Hyena’s essay at Salon.com.
9. Natural aphrodisiacs
Since days of yore, lovers have turned to natural herbs and special foods to find stimulation, endurance, and sexual health. While we can’t vouch for any of these, and all supplements should be taken with caution and/or professional advise, it is rumored that herbs like ginseng, kava kava root, damiana leaves, kelp, tribulus, ginko biloba, rhodiola rosea, and of course horny goat weed can help stoke the flames of passion—even more so if certified organic. A host of foods are also used to stimulate the sexual senses, and of course organic wine and Champaign are trusted aphrodisiacs as well.
10. Meeting that special tree hugger
Nothing’s quite worse than meeting some really promising guy or girl and then realizing that he or she is an Escalade-driving, non-recycling, Earth fucker-upper. What are you going to do? Try to reform them? Sleep with them anyway and try to ignore their unconscious ways? Forget it. Go for the green lover. Farmers markets, Critical Mass, your local Green Drinks, Whole Foods checkout isle can be great places to meet people. A host of match-making sites (see below) can also be great venues for finding that special tree hugger to hug.

1. Birth control
Your health and family-planning choices are the top priorities when it comes to birth control, but there are some notable things to consider when choosing how to go about it in a green way. As mentioned above, there are some vegan and more eco-friendly condom choices on the market, and buying in bulk, as always, saves on packaging. If you have a steady partner and you’ve both been tested for STDs, the pill is an option that can cut out the condom waste. Be aware that there are rising concerns about the hormones from birth control pills ending up in waterways and having serious effects on wildlife, both from pills flushed down the toilet, and from women’s urine. The diaphragm is another non-disposable method of baby-prevention. An IUD, or intrauterine devise, is a method of birth control that is inserted by a doctor into a woman’s uterus. The devise releases either a hormone or copper, which, oddly enough, has effective spermicidal properties. For monogamous couples not interested in any (more) kids, sterilization can be an option to consider. There are other methods as well, all of which a person should discuss with a doctor if there are doubts or questions. The rhythm and pull-out methods are notoriously ineffective and should not be relied on, no matter how green they might seem. Of course the biggest ecological impact resulting from sex is a baby. Human population is arguably the most threatening force on Earth, and with human population expected to reach 8.3 billion by 2030, reproducing is perhaps the largest impact any of us have.
2. Post-sex pee
Urinary tract infections are not uncommon for women, and after sex is a vulnerable time for our delicate little tubes. To avoid urinary tract infections and the not-so-friendly antibiotics that are often prescribed, women should pee after sex if they can. Another good reason to stay hydrated.
3. Go sexy, but go durable
Whether it’s lingerie or a new sex toy, things that are well made and even repairable are almost always the greener and more economical choice in the long run. High-quality sex toys tend to be pretty pricey, but will almost certainly last longer and give more pleasure. Keep this in mind when buying for yourself or for another. Also, note: inflatable sheep can easily be repaired with a bicycle patch kit if popped.
4. Throw a green sex toy party
Dildos are the new Tupperware. Get your friends together, get over your inhibitions, and trade ideas about healthy and eco-friendly sex and sex products.
5. Work it
Physical exercise is a well-known aphrodisiac and also something most of us probably oughta get more of. There are also plenty of internal exercises for men and women that can help make for better sex. Pilates and types of yoga both pay attention to sexual muscles, and the Chinese also have a long tradition of energy exercises, mostly for men, to build sexual health, enjoyment, and ability.
6. Personal lawn care
Some people definitely do go for the wild and untamed look, but many modern tree huggers do one thing or another to keep their body hair in check, especially when it comes to intimate moments. Shaving and waxing can do the trick, but especially waxing can be resource intensive and also expensive in the long run. Laser and electrolysis hair removal, after a number of treatments, can be more or less permanent, which might be greener over time. The Preserve razor from Recycline has replaceable heads and an ergonomic handle made from recycled plastic (mostly Stonyfield Farms yogurt cups). But don't stop there. The Razor Saver is a $12 device that resharpens dulled blade cartridges.

I am very excited to finally see the sexy side of the eco movement. I sell and install solar energy systems in Seattle and I have been saying for a long time that the industry really needs to have some beautiful Divas and goddesses posing with the products that will help our planet. I think a couple of fun movie shorts and hell , even a calendar with eco pinups might help the movement get running.
I do so love Tree Hugger. You have definitly set the bar to new hieghts!!

just fyi, from what ive read, "novelty purposes only" is printed on toys not becos of their materials, but becos theyre made in countries where sex toys are illegal, and must be manufactured and sold as actual toys, or "novelty items" to avoid the business being shut down and prosecution.
buy good quality glass toys, theyre expensive, but worth it.
and IUDs arent super effective, and can cause pretty bad uterine infections, and have to be both surgically implanted, and surgically removed.
and if you really dont want to have a baby, remember that sex can be so much more than penis in vagina. the more time you spend exploring alternate ideas of sex and sensuality with your partner, the less incidences where you could get pregnant. otherwise, the diaphram sounds like the best bet for commited couples. no weird artificial hormones, nothing to dispose of, nothing permanantly inserted into your body. good stuff.
I just wanted to add an additional comment about UTI infections and how to avoid antibiotics. I had one genius doctor tell me once, that Vitamin C can be almost as effective as antibiotics. I don't know why they do not teach us this is Sex-Ed. I had FIVE infections over the course of six months...I had begun to develop an immunity to the pills they were giving me. When I met this particular doctor, it was a miracle. I took Vitamin C pills (1000mg) three times a day and I have not had an infection since (it's been about seven months).
He told me it acidifies the urine, and somehow this prevents the infection. It's better than cranberry juice...and you can't overdose on it because your body pees out whatever Vitamin C it does not need. I think a lot of people could avoid antibiotics with this. I have told a few of my girlfriends and they all say it works! Try it!
One comment about IUDs: as great as they seem, nulligravid women are not advised to use them, because the insertion might harm the cervix and cause complications with pregnancy one day. That goes for traditional, T-shaped IUDs. However, there is a new one called GyneFix, which is basically one flexible strand of (copper?) beads, and thus minimizes insertion side-effects and it supposedly minimizes other side-effects as well (heavy period, slipping out, etc). It is gaining popularity in Europe - apparently - but it has not yet been approved in North America, as far as I know.Talk with your gynecologist and hopefully he/she will be able to tell you more about the topic (I haven't yet asked mine about the GyneFix).
Short comment about the diaphragm: it's a bigger bore than condoms because every event has to be foreseen and prepared for and sex becomes part of the scheduling agenda and looses all the fun that comes with spontaneity. The diaphragm is also less effective in preventing pregnancy than the condom or the pill, so it is not worth it - to me at least.
Thanks for this article!

Actually, the IUD is statistically the most effective birth control, and is considered ever better than sterilization. I almost got one, but my uterus was too short because I have never had a kid, so I couldn't. It would have been fantastic, though, because the package in came in was all the waste it would generate for five years!
Also, while I know hormonal bc is decried for the fish, they are testing a year-long NuvaRing, which would cut down on packaging and trips to the pharmacy.
See: plannedparenthood.org
Babies are our future and should not be seen as (un "eco") friendly. Its sad that many people do not know the effects of hormones not only in there bodies, but in the environment. High levels of hormones are cancerous... no wonder why so many women are getting breast cancer. Our children should be taught not to be vicious consumers, but to live simply and naturally. Without artificial drugs etc....
Recent studies ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6375261.stm) have found that the symptothermal method of family planning, a fertility awareness method, can be as effective as the birth control pill if the rules are followed carefully and consistently.
I am always sad when I hear articles rip on the rhythm method but not mention any alternative fertility awareness methods that actually work. STM is not the same as the "rhythm" or calendar method because it requires monitoring various fertility signs, and dates are only used to help in estimating a fertility window. It also requires couples to abstain or use a barrier method, such as condoms, at any time identified as possibly fertile (often 1/3 to 1/2 of each month). It is green in that for committed partners, it reduces or eliminates use of condoms and eliminates taking hormones (pill, patch, hormone-releasing IUD). If you consider using STM, remember that its effectiveness depends on learning your body's signs - don't take risks while you are learning!
It is a very comprehensive site furnishging all round information and knowledge. I appreciate your efforts on this score. Thanks.
43% of American's have used a sex toy? Yeah right. Maybe seen one... I doubt more than 5% use them regularly.
Natural methods of family planning are not just the "rhythm method" anymore - there are several highly effective methods, such as STM, mentioned already, and the Creighton Model, which have extremely high rates of effectiveness. It makes me so angry to see articles like this, purporting to advocate a natural lifestyle, that group any natural method of family planning into the "rhythm method", when natural family planning methods can be as or more effective than birth control. What could possibly be more natural than observing a woman's signs of fertility, rather than treating fertility like a disease that needs to be suppressed?
How to green my sex life? Gimme a break! How about you get me a sex life, then we'll worry about greening it!!!
First of all this is a great site! I can't believe I never stumbled across it before. I found the link while getting simple shoe gift cards for fam. Which is a nice alternative to all the wrapong and maybe get others thinking green... anyways a good personal umm... lube is 100% aloe vera... yeah veerryy effiecient. :) so there.
IUDs have come a long way since the 70s. They are perfectly fine for women who have never had children, are extremely effective, and don't interfere with spontaneity.
My ob had no problem giving one to me even though I haven't had children. I've had a copper one for about 5 years and it is wonderful!
Here is the link from planned parenthood:

They're green, cheap over their lifetime of 5-10 years, and if you want to have kids, you pretty much return to fertility the day it it is taken out (unlike hormonal methods, which can take months to years to return to fertility.) Wahoo!
I just wanted to say thank you to Treehugger for visiting Babeland and recognizing all of our efforts to provide green sex toys to our customers. We often don't think of our sex lives as something that generates waste or involves harmful chemicals but Treehugger is raising that awareness. Thanks!
I'm surprised to see that Natural Family Planning wasn't mentioned. It's based on charting your cycle by measuring your basal body temperature, position of the cervix and cervical "mucous".You know exactly when you are are fertile and when you are not. It takes three minutes every morning before you even get out of bed to start your day. It's taught by a couple with experience in this type of birth control . It was really inexpensive, too. It cost us $65 plus the cost of the thermometer (about $5) for something that you will know and can use forever. This is recommended for disease free, monogamous couples. We've been using it for almost 5 years and it's worked perfectly. You can also use it if you wanna get pregnant before having to resort to infertility treatments. Talk about environmentally friendly: it uses no chemicals (except those contained in the thermometer), the information is retained forever and can be passed on (reduce/reuse) and it's very empowering for the couple and establishes closeness and commitment. That's just what we need in this world.
I have an IUD and it's great! It's idiot proof. That means when I see a cute baby and have that moment of weakness where I think, perhaps just this once. . .anyhow, it works and I don't have to go and hunt for condoms or remember to take a pill.
Oh, I am a volunteer water tester-the estradiol (I hope that's how to spell it) does show up in the water. My IUD doesn't put that stuff into our water-even when I pee directly into the river.
I also use an epilator on my legs. It plugs in and tweezes the hair from the parts that need to be hair free for whatever reason. I've not used shaving cream nor razors for almost two years and my legs are silky smooth. Braun makes one as does Emjoi. The way I figure, I've saved about a dozen razors a month (I'm furry) and about one to two cans of shaving goo a month.
It's green and cheap and I can give myself my own brazilian if needed. I'm also able to manage my chia-pits quite nicely.
OK, that's my two cents.
My home is connected to town sewerage. I never gace much thought to flushing my used condoms. It works very nicely and avoids a messy problem in the waste basket, Hope it is ok to continue flushing my used rubbers.
I'm glad to see several people point out the glaring lack of information about natural birth-control. As has been said, although rhythm and withdrawal aren't very effective, temperature and mucus methods of charting fertility can be 100% effective contraception. My partner and I used natural birth-control for six years before consciously conceiving our daughter (first try!) The down side is that you have to abstain from intercourse or use another birth-control method when you are both MOST in the mood.... all the pheremones are saying "YES!" One book calls it the "cooperative method of birth control" and we sure discovered that we both had to abide by the fertility signs and not take risks. The up side is no cost, no waste, no hormonal changes or weird side-effects, knowledge of the woman's cycle, and lots more oral sex!
I generally like to stay away from these kinds of posts, as its not "my thing." Rather go au naturel, though I was hoping to see mention of herbal contraceptions. I have recently studied alternatives such as Queen Anne's Lace or Wild Yam. Though these would of course be seen as more risky there were at least some private studies done to determine methods and dosages. Another amusing alternative was something called "ejaculation control." Perhaps some things to *thoroughly* research for anyone looking for the most natural methods. Ironic this was my first post at this site, but I feel that birth control is one of those things that is having a hard time greening itself up again. Treehugger seems to have *most* every other answer.
I also was disapointed by the glaring absense of natural birth control, and glad to see others point out this mistake. The "rhythm" method is long a thing of the past; today's Fertility Awareness Method is a proven, effective method of birth control that cuts down on waste and hormones.
You could develop some great pick-up lines from these tips.
Just wanted to make a correction, someone said the IUD isnt very effective, just so everyone has the right facts, as that is a common myth. The IUD (Mirena) is the *MOST* effective reversable birth control in the world, having an annual failure rate of 0.1% with both typical and perfect use, while condoms typical failure rate is 15%.
Also, with the IUD compaired to the pill, dont forget about all those little packages you get every time you get a new months worth of pills, something you dont need to worry about with an IUD.
If you want to check up on the failure rate, visit:
http://www.plannedparenthood.org/birth-control-pregnancy/effectiveness.htm
Just a really entertaining article! I loved it.
I, too, just want to comment on the lack of information about natural birth control. I have nothing much to add to the previous comments about its effectiveness and ease of use and obvious benefits for the environment (none of the other options offer ZERO waste and ZERO chemicals). You had a great opportunity here to correct the misinformation that the public has about natural birth control, and you blew it by lumping it all together with the obsolete "rhythm" method. Few people will read through all the comments and see that there are other options out there. Maybe you'll have an opportunity to revisit this topic and include the various natural birth control options in the text of the article--where they belong.
I just wanted to share a Technique that doesn't need batteries however if it works for your woman it may prove to be the single greatest power source in the universe .... the power of multiple orgasms. Ok well maybe the greatest power SOURCE is a bit of an exageration but the two of you'll be so happy and she'll be so satisfied you won't CARE if the lights go out.
ENJOY

I just heard about this Green Sex Life on GlobalGrind.com. This articles givs some interesting if not entertaining tips, it was great!
I was also dismayed to see only the ridiculous "rhythm method" being the one form of natural birth control mentioned. My partner and I have successfully used the sympto-thermal method (aka Natural Family Planning, aka Fertility Awareness) for 7 years, with 2 planned and zero unplanned pregnancies in that time. It is easy to learn (I bought the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility"), takes only a couple of minutes a day and we have no synthetic hormones, no latex and no packaging to worry about.
Seems odd to me that people who will walk a mile to avoid a hormone-fed chicken have no trouble swallowing a whole tablet full of them every day.
Great List.
#10 is the most important..
I have had friends who tried natural family planning. These were extremely intelligent, highly intuitive women who knew their bodies well.
They all had babies. All of them.
They dedicated a great deal of time and effort into natural family planning methods, watching temps closely, mucous, following and charting cycles, herbal birth control methods and the like.
Of course this works for some, but if you are absolutely in no position to have a baby or get pregnant I would never recommend that method.
My IUD has been pretty good for the most part but I do feel it, especially during sex. Could be the tilt of my uterus, the size of it, or the positions we use but sex isn't the same. I am considering it's removal in favor of going back on Yasmine (now yaz?). My friends (opting for IUDs after natural planning failed for them) all love theirs.
Hopefully the desire for more earth friendly birth control options will bring them about. If we are peeing hormones that is because we are getting too much of them. If the pharmas or someone would come up with birth control options that weren't overdosing u
