Climate Change Concert Event to "Dwarf Live 8"

Early this morning, the UK's Financial Times reported that a major concert event aimed at bringing even more attention to the issue of climate change is in the works. The FT reports that former Vice President Al Gore will announce the event tomorrow in London. The early word on the show:

The event, scheduled for July 7, will feature co-ordinated film, music and television events in seven cities including London, Washington DC, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town and Kyoto, with major broadcasters and media owners aiming to extend the reach of public awareness of global warming. ...

They are promising a line-up of artists to "dwarf" that of the Live8 and Live Aid concerts, thought to be branded under the name "SOS".

One person close to the event said yesterday: "The talent involved is just exponentially bigger because the issue itself is bigger.

"Live Aid was about asking people to stump up money, this is about effecting systemic change.

As we've followed the music world's efforts to address the climate crisis, we'll be watching closely for this announcement. A few of us are old enough to remember the original Live Aid concerts, and are excited that the entertainment community will once again be gathering to address an issue of global significance... ::Financial Times via Climate Change Action

And what, pray tell, will be the footprint of this massive concert? I haven't heard of any solar Marshall amps...

The original LiveAid was caused by climate change! People just couldn't join the dots at that time.

Be interested to see a total of the carbon footprints of those performing. No doubt they will be offsetting their world's! Get out of jail free ... in a private jet! ;o)

Offsetting is the last thing we should do. Efficiency and switching to renewables are the first.

I'm supposing, that like the super bowl, there will be attempts to offset the carbon footprint of the concert.

I just hope that it ends up being a little more successful than Live 8 at getting people to care about the cause it was pushing. I went to Live 8 in London, and guess what? People went there for the music, mostly ignoring the parts about Africa.

Heck, if you asked any of the people I went with if they learned anything from the concert, they wouldn't be able to say much. Africa's in trouble? Most people knew that already. How could you help? *shrug shoulders* I guess you can donate money...

I'm hoping this massive world concert justifies its resources by actually teaching everybody something (especially in China!)

re: JHayes

Sigh. And since food was eaten by the people in concerts that raised awareness about hunger in Africa, they are bad, right?

I may have to harass and cojole to get my band a spot on this thing.

Al Gore is awesome. He certainly hasn't squandered the time off he's had when he should've been running this country (sorry, sorry... truth is annoying). I'd go to a Gore concert anyday.
