Bush Showcases Plug-In Electric Cars

Yesterday, President George Bush peered under the hood of two electric cars parked on the White House lawn (see video here). The two cars were a modified Toyota Prius, and an electric pickup built by Phoenix Motorcars. Bush made a short speech to reiterate his State of the Union Address saying: "I firmly believe that the goal I laid out, that Americans will use 20 percent less gasoline over the next 10 years is going to be achieved, and here's living proof of how we're going to get there." The Prius on display had a high-power lithium-ion battery made by A123 Systems. It can power the car for about 40 miles and recharge in five hours. The white truck, made by Phoenix Motorcars, uses a different kind of high-powered battery made by Altair Nanotechnologies. The battery has a range of 130 miles and can be recharged in about 10 minutes with a rapid-charging unit or trickle-charged overnight with its onboard charger. :: New York Times

W's plugging electric! 'Plug in and go' doesn't fit the oil industry paradigm of fill up and go. Go figure.

I just watched "Who killed the Electric Car?" last night, so its a relief to see President Bush giving props to plug-ins. It was kind of funny how moved emotionally I was by the crushing of all of the EV-1 Fleet, truly sad.

The truck has to be expensive, otherwise it sounds too good to be true. It's good to prove to Bush that a Texan can have his pickup and still conserve gas.

The President does get the idea that electric powered vehicles do make sense. He has been in office while hybrid vehicle markets have expanded significantly and the market clamors for plug-in hybrids.

As I have always said the most logical choice is an electric car.

Just takes longer for some to state reality.

It is really stupid that you can drive around in a f350 diesel truck and use it as a car and never really haul anything but you look cool?[an observation from a recent visit to texas]

Come on guys! I never seen a photo op so reminiscent of the saying "Two steps forward, one step back". While Bush hyped the prospect of using plug-in hybrids, he himself remained non-committal to the prospect of getting one himself.

jump to top Gerald Shields says:

Why are people supprised, Bush has been driving a propane powered truck for years.

Looking at that photo, it appears the President has run someone over. And then backed into a planter.

Good thing the Decider is usually a passenger these days.

These trucks are pretty expensive about $45K but over time they should come down in price. They are sold out for 2008. Remember, they are still running on energy that needs to be produced. Solar recharge would be the great.
