Al Gore Announces Live Earth Concert

We reported to you last week that Al Gore is going to be organizing a concert event to even further promote the issue of global warming. Yesterday, the formal announcement came: “The 24-hour event on July 7 is part of a campaign, Save Our Selves -- The Campaign for a Climate in Crisis.” The concerts will take place on seven continents, with concerts in China, South Africa, Australia, London, Japan, Brazil and the United States. It’s said that this concert, dubbed Live Earth, could reach as many as 2 billion people. "In order to solve the climate crisis, we have to reach billions of people,” Al Gore said in a statement. “The climate crisis will only be stopped by an unprecedented and sustained global movement.” More than 100 performers are scheduled to appear, including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bon Jovi, Snoop Dogg, Melissa Etheridge, the Foo Fighters, Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, Duran Duran, Korn, Pharrell, the Black Eyed Peas, Akon, Enrique Iglesias, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw. Proceeds will create a foundation to combat climate change led by The Alliance for Climate Protection, which is chaired by Gore. Don't forget to submit your video about climate change! like the idea but do the performers fit to the issue of fighting global warming? i think most of them contribute to global warming more three times as much the avarage western citizen does. not only that many of them consume large amounts of the most poluting products and services from the most unsustainable companies (by them they are often sponsored too). they also function as role models of overconsumption lifestyles around the globe.
i read about this event on a german weblog and the author is right in asking whether snoop dog will drive by suv to the stage. maybe it is effective to have performers for every thinkable target group. but isn´t it some cheeky when top ressource wasters want their audience to drive smaller cars or even consume less?
as said in an previous post, i think it would be better to do strong naming-and-shaming on overconsuming celebs and highlight only those who really strive for sustainable lifestyle.
this not only would be more reliable but maybe make more people realize that striving for monetary wealth makes no sence cause if you really spend a lot money it is automatically at the expense of others - even if you only go for dozens of "green" fashion, houses, cars, holidays, furnitures etc
the german newspaper "taz" today shamed the german rapper cool savas for first wanting to have fun with riding suvs and sportcars for some more years unless he sees himself able to buy a hybrid and drive less.
things will change fast when ordinary people point their finger on overconsuming celebs, no longer cause they idolize them but cause they condemn them for exploiting common goods.
Unless they are preforming in Antarctica, or Japan became its own continent, I count only six continents preformed on, not the stated seven.
I just found the answer to my own question. They will be going to Antarctica. What a waste.
All the performers mentioned in the article seem to be past their best-before date. Perhaps Antarctica is an entirely appropriate venue? It's either that, or they'd end up doing late night info-mercials.
Will you go to Antarctica to watch that show? :)

Re Al Gore - my first reaction is to say to Al: Way to go Mr. President. How many times in our lives will we see a popular politician like Al stand up for the environment?
Please support his organization. - Segue
Let performers, sponsors and as many as possible viewers of this concert around the globe, plant a tree, at least one.
Except the CO2 sequestration, the plant also keeps the soil, prevents erosion, preserves air moisture, makes the weather milder, creates wind- and noise- barrier, gives food to human and animals, gives material for making clothes, houses, energy to warm up and cook, etc. Every human invention in that tenor is far more expensive, unilateral and not so effective.
This action will make a difference, people will feel that they are part of it, that they really do something signficant, that this depends on them, but it isn't just the next show, the next concert on the row.
See Desert Ice Project for more details.
Okay, my personal opinion Live earth is a brilliant idea and the concert will infact make some changes and more people aware. Though there is one thing I think should be added in, not only do I feel this way but many other Canadians feel that you should also have a concert here in Canada because you know thousands would attend. The amount of people who attended Live aid in Toronto was outstanding and it would be just as large amount of people supporting this cause too. It would make even more people aware and more support in the cause if you add Canada into the list, it would increase the overall viewers just think thousands of more people added on the the already huge amount.
Please take this into consideration
Kathy
Live Earth is great idea, but I think, that concert in Antarctica
is a bit stupid. Who would go there?
I'm in England and think it's great idea but still no news of venue or tickets.
Unless I am missing something where's this Global Warming everyone is talking about? I live in the Midwest where it's April the 9th and it was 30 degrees and snowing! C'mon, seriously.
2 Richard.
Tickets for Live Earth in London will be available this weekend. At first, you must register and if your registration will be successfull, next week you will get info where you can purchase for tickets. See unofficial London's Live Earth concert website for more details
Great Idea... lets go to antarctica and burn tons of fuel to get our ships there with supplies and generators and equipment, all the while under the biggest whole in the ozone layer. Great way to stop global warming.
And how is a concert supposed to raise global warming awareness when most of the time you can't here what people are saying at a concert from all the yelling. People go for the music because they know the words and can sing along. They don't go to save the planet or to listen to the boring anacdotes the performers interject between songs.
How on "earth" can an event like this possibly do anything but contribute to global warming with all the air travel created by artists, trucks shipping equipment, cars for fans travelling to event, electricity used..It doesn't set much of an example, what can it possibly achieve?.. how shortsighted of Mr Gore who is determined to seal his place in history - long after he had the chance to make a real difference when in office.
isnt Fall Out Boy suppose to be there?
To Autumn:
Fall Out Boy will play at Live Earth at Giant Stadium in New Jersey.
See list of confirmed Live Earth artists
It's unofficial Live Earth website, but all artists are confirmed. I know that guy who creates that website.
He verifies all news and every information.
If you and i should decide not to plant a tree, would the tree than decide not to grow because we would not plant it? Don't trees grow on their own whether we plant them or not? Just cirious!
i cant believe they're going to antartica before canada!....that just pisses me off.....okay fine, they're doing 7 concerts, on 7 contenents on 07/07/07.....wooooo, having the same number is SOOOOO important....man, going to antartica over canada is rediculous.....sarsfest in 2003, held in downsview park, toronto ontario had over 490,000 people!!! they would have SO much more support if it was held in canada instead of antartica....there would be so many more people aware that this concert was even going on.....i live in London Ontario, and i've only heard ONCE on the radio that this concert was even taking place....that was two weeks ago...i had to look it up on the internet just now to figure out if this concert was even taking place or if i misheard what they said.....that tells me there are a LOT of other canadians that are unaware of this concert....if there was a concert in canada, it would be advertised more, and they would definatly have more support, regardless of who the lineup is....picking antartica over canada is just stupid....from what i've been hearing lately (i dont know for sure that its true) canada is, or is going to be, one of the most affected countries on the planet because of global warming...not only will canada be one of the most affected countries, but we are one of the biggest problem...canadians need to be aware! i think these people need to pull thier head out of thier ass and realize that having the number '7' for everything, is a little less important than the awarness of global warming
Yeah, who would go to Antarctica! Stupid scientists, what do they think they're doing trying to research global warming by measuring temperatures or carbon dioxide levels in the coldest corner of the planet, ay?!
An, having a concert down there too, it's as if they were there to have fun! They could have at least shipped in a decent band, instead of just using the dodgy scientists who were down there working anyway. That's not really making much of an effort is it. Only 17 people in the audience, why don't they send a few more, after all, what chance have 17 people got of finding oil in a place that big?
Kudos to Mr. Gore's effort to raise awareness of global warming, and encouraging individuals to do their small part. We all contribute a small part to the larger problem, we can all contribute a small part to the larger solution. Check out jointhesolution.com\endpollution to learn how you can decrease (even eliminate if you have an electric car) your carbon foot print.
How much energy could be saved if on 7-7-07 a half a million people did not travel to concerts on seven continents; 150 musicians, their casts, their crews and their personal jet planes stayed put; the lights and sound systems at seven (plus) venues stayed off; and nearly 2 billions people turned off their televisions, radios and computers with which they might otherwise be viewing the Live Earth concert for 24 hours?
I thought Al Gore liked Canada. Why the snub?
What is wrong with the location guys??????????
Why it should take place somewhere else.? you want to contribute?you want to live it? buy your ticket and stop nagging..
LIVE EARTH ATTACKS CLIMATE
An open letter to Al Gore and The Alliance for Climate Protection
in response to the Live Earth Event's
July 5, 2007
I appreciate your concerns & your efforts, but I think you are a little misguided. The idea is to reduce global warming and greenhouse gases not to use as much energy as we can in one day. You are setting a terrible example. Instead of reducing global energy consumption, you are hosting 8 giant concerts in 8 cities around the world with 150 performers.
Are all of these performers, their bands and support crews walking to the Live Earth venues so as not to use jet fuel and gasoline? Not likely! They will all fly and/or drive in their private jets, tour buses and limousines and put more greenhouse gases into the environment.
Are all of these performers planning on playing acoustic instruments without microphones and lights at Live Earth? No, they will all be plugged in and using as much electricity as they can; putting more poisonous gases into our environment.
All of the people who are being encouraged to attend these Live Earth shows will also have to fly and/or drive putting more greenhouse gases into the environment. Millions of people around the world will be encouraged to watch Live Earth on television and the Internet, using more electricity in a foolish manor, creating more pollution. Spectators will be invited to sign a statement on Live Earth's Internet site or by text message, using more electricity in an unnecessary manor.
If you were truly concerned about our environment, you would encourage millions of people to turn off their Televisions and computers for the day, in a positive effort to reducing the global consumption of electricity. Will you, Al Gore, walk to the Live Earth concert in New York and the surprise venue? Highly unlikely! Or do you plan on flying your private jet and ride in multiple gas-guzzling limousine, polluting as much as you possibly can?
Thanks for your help, pollute on; I hope the Earth can survive your efforts.
I for one will not be watching Live Earth. I also make a pledge to Al Gore and The Alliance for Climate Protection: I will not turn on my Television or computer on July 7th in an effort to reduce the electricity consumption and do my small part to protect the climate and Mother Earth.
CONSIDER THIS VIEW
Al Gore, The Alliance for Climate Protection and the Live Earth supporters could act in a more positive manor and help reduce the Greenhouse Gases in the environment. They could use their Millions and Influence to encourage people around the world to turn off their televisions and computers for just one day. They could ask the worlds population not to drive their cars or fly their planes for just one day. They could encourage the major cities such as New York, Sydney, Tokyo, London, Shanghai, Hamburg, Johannesburg, and Rio de Janeiro to go dark for just one hour. Imagine how much energy could be saved if Los Vegas turned off their lights for just one hour. There are positive things that could be done if we just put in the effort.
Please help save our planet

Doesn't anyone remember the PMRC? How about when Gore lost his run for the Presidency in 2000? The way he whined and moaned demanding recount after recount? Al Gore is seeking power and nothing else. This is just his current stepping stone to the white house just as the PMRC was in the 80s. I can't believe everyone is falling for this. Even the media is now covering every weather story as the onset of global warming. Yesterday they all seemed amazed that Vegas was having temperatures over 110 degrees. Why wasn't that a global warming issue when I was there 10 years ago (Al was in the white house). It was 120 degrees then. It's a desert! It gets really hot in the summer. That's all. The truth is that the earths climate has always gone through changes. At one time, all of the continents where connected ( Pangaea ).. NASA research says reduced solar activity from the 1400s to the 1700s was likely a key factor in the “Little Ice Age” not an SUV. Volcanic eruptions can change climate. Our effect on the environment is small when compared to nature and all the suggested life changes won't really do much to change it. This save the planet trend is just something Gore is using to promote himself. Think for yourself people. Don't by what this man tells you. Enjoy the concert but remember, Al is a politician and nothing more.
Is'nt it time to ban plastic carriers if they were not available shoppers would find alternative carriers.
What the hell is happening here. Stars using my life supply of carbon footprint to perform. The only people to make a difference to the climate is the common man and woman. You and me. If need be lets take to the streets , but dont belive the shit Gore comes out with. A politician, promise the earth and , result the square root of sod all. We can make a difference, just believe. Merv
Al Gore, I have such a differt concept on you, you ARE OUT TO SAVE THE WORLD. That takes a lot of self sacrafice. I ADMRIE YOU tremendously
I drive a SUV i use 100 watt bulbs every light on in my house even during thre day and my A/C is on high temp set to 60
