The Helium Report on Flying Carbon Neutral

When we gave a friendly challenge to the Helium Report last week, we weren't sure how they would react or if they would react at all. But within about 15 minutes of the publication of our post (!), Jamie Cheng, co-founder of the Helium Report, responded positively by accepting our offer of collaboration (we still need to work out the details...). They even published "When Flying in a Private Jet, Fly Carbon Neutral" in response to the challenge, a piece encouraging their readers to offset their carbon emissions. They found out that "it costs less than 1% of the flying cost per hour to fly carbon neutral." A step in the right direction. Don't stop now!

This is the most hilarious justification of gross excess that I have seen in a while.

"An hour in a private jet burns as much fuel as one year of driving."

This sums it, doesn't it? The rest is a smokescreen.

The pollution is already air. The oil has already been taken out of the ground from some war-torn part of the planet. $50 a flight doesn't make any of this better.

You're either using the fossil fuels or you are not. In this case, there are many alternatives to using 450 gallons of fuel per hour for travel, so the practice is unjustifiable.

Stick to your guns, TreeHugger! You could have hit much harder on this issue. Call this what it is: An excuse to go on with the status quo.

At least when the private jet flyers arrive at their vacation destination they can now stay in carbon neutral homes. http://www.sherpareport.com/destination-clubs/bellehavens-carbo-neutral.html

Does this house sharing model offset the use of private (ie non shared) jets ? Interested to hear TreeHuggers thoughts on this.
