Phoenix Motorcars Sells Out!

by EcoGeek.org on 01.16.07
Cars & Transportation (cars)

Before their first all-electric sport utility trucks even exist, Phoenix Motorcars has orders for their first run of 75 vehicles. The SUTs are using a new kind of lithium ion battery that, while less power-dense than current batteries is much safer and will not explode if damaged.

The cost of the SUTs is still unknown, but is likely to be in the $40-$50,000 range. All but one of the trucks were purchased by municipalities, the other one was purchased by a 'utility.' So, alas, no private owners yes.

However, Phoenix is about to do crash testing on it's first five trucks and, after that, they'll be producing a round of 500 vehicles during 2007. When those cars start rolling off the line, it'll be time for us all to start taking out our executive wallets.

That headline is misleading. "Sells out" can either mean "their products are no longer in stock because they were so popular every last one got purchased", or "they compromised their values for a quick profit". I didn't know whether to cheer or to mourn when I read that headline.

How did they sell out with an unknown price? Is the price known to the buyers but not the general public?

That would be quite a sales pitch to get 75 blank checks with no product to show.

I agree, very poor headline writing...

RE: above criticisms... Oh no! You have to think for more than 3 seconds to get the gist of the article :,(

What's with all the armchair editors on this site these days? I so rarely read positive comments, it's sad.

Keep it coming, Hank! I'm very interested in the future of Phoenix.

Looks to me like just another spendy electric vehicle that no one can afford to buy. Do what I did and convert your own pickup over to electric power. I now have a totally electric daily driver that cost me about $5500.00 to convert and about 6 months worth of weekends to complete.

I think what phoenix is doing is rather groundbreaking regardless of the content and style of the above article. I'm more upset that I can't find a listing for them on the NYSE. Phoenix motorcars is making steps toward mainstream fully electric vehicles, and that is the real headline. Not to futrher criticize the author of the article, but the batteries used are not lithium ion they are powered by nanoparticles. That technology is rather intersting andyou can invest in it. As for you, Herb, "Your ideas intrigue me I wish to subcribe to your news letter".

jump to top johnathon says:

Well Altairnano owns 16% of Phoenix Motorcars and Altairnano's stock symbiol is ALTI on the Nasdaq.

So if you are an owner of ALTI stock, you partially own Phoenix Motorcars.

jump to top David G. says:

My Company is ready to buy one or more Phoenix trucks. If we need to pay a higher cost because they are only doing a partial run and there is little competition yet, so be it. However, our stupid Government should be providing incentives to everyone involved. I am interested in how we can convert existing trucks. Herb, can you provide me more information?

jump to top Ken Thompson says:

It will cost $47,500 for the sut and it will travel 3.71 miles per kwh. So you can drive 10,000 miles for under $450 if your electricity rate is $0.16 per kwh.
