Reading the Future: Utne Reader January-February

It's that time of year: time for giving gifts to family and friends, making resolutions for the new year, and, of course, checking out who won the Utne Independent Press Awards. Now in its eighteenth year, the UIPA demonstrates that the independent press is alive and well, and still providing an alternative to the blandness that springs from the most massive publications of the mass market. Special congratulations go out to Ecologist, which captured the prize for environmental coverage in a very competitive field that included Grist, Green Car Journal and World Watch. Other winners include Wilson Quarterly (General Excellence, Magazines), In These Times (Political Coverage), and Seed (Science/Tech Coverage) .
