Las Vegas Does The Geothermal Strip
by John Laumer, Philadelphia on 12.31.06

Via the Geothermal Energy Association, "Nevada is on-track to be producing more than 1000 megawatts (MW) of geothermal power in the next 3-5 years, a level that would meet roughly 25% of the state's total power needs, according to a new report from the Geothermal Energy Association (GEA)...The report identifies up to 29 new geothermal power projects now under development in Nevada and finds that new power plants would produce as much as 853 MW". Heck yeah, there is or will be plenty of heat generation from around Yucca Mtn!
Seriously, I think geothermal should be getting much more airtime than it does. It's a fantastic use of technology in many many ways.
I agree; I think any and all renewable energy sources should be getting more publicity. :)
What the heck happened to Hoover Dam? Have they maxed it out? I´m not impressed.

Comment About The Hoover Dam
Took a tour last year of the Dam (DAMN!!) and the guide said Vegas gets a little tiny bit of power. It seems the mayor of Las Vegas said Vegas would never grow beyond 5,000 people and only reserved power for that many people. Almost all of the power for Vegas comes from a coal fired plant 70 miles away. Almost all of the power goes to southern California. (go figure)
I believe the guide said the contracts for the DAM power (that sounds funny) expire in 2016 so watch for a big fight over the reallocation of rights. He also predicted a major upgrade to the output there after as technology has advanced and the economics make sense. If you ever have a chance, go take the tour, it is REALLY cool and you even get to go into the turbine room!!
It's really rubbish city
